MUMBAI. In a historic milestone for India’s nuclear sector, RM Nachammai has been appointed as the first woman Chief Superintendent of a functional nuclear power plant. Effective March 15, she takes charge of Units 3 and 4 at Karnataka’s Kaiga Generating Station, overseeing critical operations, maintenance, and engineering support.
With a distinguished career spanning 35 years, Nachammai is a Madras University rank holder and a recipient of the Vikram Sarabhai Award. Her elevation is a significant breakthrough in a specialized field where women represent less than ten percent of the workforce. NPCIL Chairman BC Pathak described her appointment as a celebration of Nari Shakti, noting that her technical excellence paves the way for future generations of women engineers. As India targets 100 gigawatts of nuclear capacity by 2047, Nachammai’s leadership at the 880 MW Kaiga hub stands as a powerful symbol of gender parity and professional achievement in clean energy.
