NEW DELHI. The Press Information Bureau (PIB) Fact Check Unit (FCU) has issued over 2,900 verifications to counter misinformation related to the central government, as part of intensified efforts to curb fake news. Functioning under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the unit verifies misleading content using authorised sources and disseminates accurate information through platforms such as X, Facebook, Instagram, Telegram and WhatsApp. It has addressed a wide range of false content, including deepfakes, AI-generated material, fake notifications and fraudulent websites, thereby helping citizens access reliable information.
The government highlighted that the initiative plays a crucial role in maintaining information integrity and public trust, especially during sensitive situations such as Operation Sindoor, where over 1,400 misleading URLs were blocked. Supported by the IT Rules, 2021, the FCU also promotes public participation by encouraging citizens to report suspicious content, making it an important tool in combating misinformation and strengthening digital awareness.
