The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and Biotechnology Research and Innovation Council (BRIC) have launched the ‘One Day One Genome’ initiative to spotlight India’s rich microbial diversity. The initiative was announced by Shri Amitabh Kant, India’s G-20 Sherpa and former CEO of NITI Aayog, during BRIC’s first foundation day at the National Institute of Immunology (NII), New Delhi, on November 9, 2024.
The initiative aims to sequence and showcase unique bacterial genomes found in India, emphasizing their critical roles in the environment, agriculture, and human health. Microorganisms play an essential part in maintaining ecological balance, contributing to nutrient cycling, soil fertility, pest control, and human digestion, immunity, and mental health.
Coordinated by BRIC-NIBMG, the project will release annotated bacterial genomes freely accessible to the public. These will be supplemented with graphical summaries, infographics, and genome details, highlighting their scientific and industrial potential. This will promote greater accessibility to microbial genomics data, fostering research, innovation, and community benefits.
Genome sequencing under this initiative will uncover enzymes, bioactive compounds, and antimicrobial resistance capabilities, driving advancements in environmental protection, agriculture, and healthcare. The initiative aims to transform microbial research into actionable solutions for a sustainable future.
