An 80-year-old woman has successfully undergone a left knee replacement surgery at the Ispat General Hospital (IGH) of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP). The complex procedure was performed by a team of experienced doctors led by Dr. S. K. Tiwari, Additional CMO & Head of the Orthopedics Department. Anesthesia support during the surgery was provided by Dr. M. Samantaray, Deputy CMO (Anesthesia).
Given the patient’s age and associated health conditions, the surgery posed significant challenges. However, the expert medical team executed the procedure successfully, and the patient is now swiftly recovering.
The elderly woman, who had been suffering from severe knee degeneration and required bilateral knee replacement, expressed her gratitude, saying, “I am extremely thankful to the medical team for giving me a new lease of life. This surgery has given me the confidence to go ahead with the right knee replacement soon.”
Ms. Pavitra Samal, a paramedical staff member at IGH and daughter of the patient, added, “We were initially hesitant due to our mother’s age, but the doctors reassured us. We are immensely grateful to them for restoring her mobility and relieving her of prolonged pain.”
Notably, knee osteoarthritis, a common and debilitating condition caused by cartilage wear and tear, is increasingly prevalent with rising life expectancy. Advanced cases often necessitate Total Knee Replacement, a complex surgical procedure requiring expertise. IGH has been at the forefront of performing these surgeries for over two decades, offering advanced treatment to patients without the need for expensive interventions at distant facilities. The hospital continues to uphold its reputation as a trusted healthcare provider, transforming lives and restoring mobility.
