NHAI Launches Nationwide Drive to Upgrade Public Toilets at Toll Plazas

NHAI Public Toilet Upgrade Initiative at Toll Plazas

New Delhi: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has launched a nationwide initiative to develop world-class public toilet facilities at toll plazas, introducing a technology-driven, performance-based maintenance system to improve hygiene, accessibility and commuter convenience across the National Highway network. Under the programme, existing toilet blocks will be renovated and new facilities will be built using standardised indigenous designs with durable structures and sustainable green building features. The initiative aims to provide clean, safe and accessible sanitation facilities while ensuring uniform quality standards across highways.

To ensure efficient upkeep, NHAI has adopted an Internet of Things (IoT)-based live telemetry system for real-time monitoring of maintenance, supported by a performance-linked payment mechanism based on Service Level Agreement (SLA) assessments, independent audits and commuter feedback through the RajmargYatra mobile application. According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, all new facilities will comply with the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPWD) Act, 2016, and include universal accessibility features, reliable water supply, modern sanitation infrastructure and enhanced safety and privacy provisions for women travellers, setting new benchmarks for highway amenities across the country.
