Kolkata Airport Celebrates 100 Years of Aviation Excellence

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata commemorates its centenary on December 21, with a grand event inaugurated by Union Minister Rammohan Naidu Kinjarapu. Celebrations include launching the UDAN Yatri Cafe and releasing a commemorative stamp and coin, highlighting the airport’s role in India’s aviation history.

The celebrations aim to honor the airport’s rich legacy and its crucial role in advancing Indian aviation. In line with this, a budget-friendly cafe, ‘UDAN Yatri Cafe,’ will be introduced at the airport as a pilot project supporting transformational initiatives by MoCA and AAI, offering passengers affordable and quality food.

Initially established in 1924 as Dum Dum Airport, it has played a pivotal role in India’s aviation history, hosting the Bengal Flying Club in 1929, becoming one of the first jet service hubs in 1964, and opening a dedicated airline cargo terminal in 1975. In 1995, it was renamed to honor the great freedom fighter and underwent significant upgrades, including the inauguration of a New Integrated Terminal in 2013 that elegantly combines heritage with innovation, establishing itself as the gateway to East and Northeast India. The centenary celebration will be marked by an event inaugurated by notable dignitaries, including Shri Rammohan Naidu Kinjarapu, the Hon’ble Union Minister of Civil Aviation, highlighting the airport’s rich legacy and future contributions to Indian aviation.

Additional initiatives include the release of a commemorative stamp and coin honoring the airport’s 100-year legacy, alongside the launch of a coffee table book that showcases India’s cultural heritage through modern airport architecture. NSCBI Airport is equipped to handle 26 million passengers annually, serving 49 domestic and 15 international destinations. As a significant driver of economic growth, the airport not only connects Eastern India with the world through state-of-the-art air-freight services but also stands as a testament to Kolkata’s spirit of resilience, progress, and connectivity.
