NEW DELHI. India’s steel consumption has nearly doubled over the past decade, rising from 77 million tonnes in 2014-15 to 152 million tonnes in 2024-25, Secretary of the Ministry of Steel Sandeep Pondrik said at the Ministry’s pavilion during the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi. Highlighting the sector’s rapid growth trajectory, he expressed confidence that the country’s crude steel capacity will expand to 300 million tonnes by 2030-31 and further to 400 million tonnes by 2035-36. The session brought together leading steel producers and iron ore miners to outline forward-looking roadmaps for collaboration with AI innovators, fostering dialogue on high-impact use cases and strategic partnerships to accelerate digital transformation. The AI in Steel Pavilion at the summit is showcasing key industry challenges and inviting AI solution providers to contribute towards positioning India as a global steel manufacturing hub. ( AIR)
