In a significant step toward enhancing operational safety and efficiency, SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has launched a GPS-based Vehicle Tracking System (VTS). This transformative initiative aims to strengthen vehicle monitoring, ensure compliance, and improve overall safety within the plant premises. The system, hosted on a cloud server, integrates advanced GPS technology with RSP’s existing SAP infrastructure to provide real-time vehicle tracking and automated route management.
The GPS-based Vehicle Tracking System at RSP monitors vehicle movements through five key gates namely Hirakud Gate, SGP Gate, NTP Gate and SSSY Gate. At the entry gates, CISF personnel attach portable GPS trackers to vehicles, which are removed upon exit. The system integrates with RSP’s SAP system, transmitting entry permit details such as gate, destination, and route via HTTPS API to the VTS cloud platform. The VTS software processes this information to determine the optimal route and generate alerts as necessary.
The key features of the new digitalized system are Real-Time Tracking for Continuous monitoring of vehicles during their stay within the premises, Alerts Generation for Route violations, Speed violations and Tracker tampering.
The new system will help CISF personnel to oversee vehicle movements with enhanced efficiency. It also reduces manual intervention, streamlining operations and generates alerts and logs to ensure adherence to plant rules, aiding better decision-making processes.
The initial trials of the system are being conducted with select commercial vehicles at the Hirakud Gate. Following successful trials at Hirakud Gate, the system will be gradually implemented across all gates of the plant.
The Project has been implemented by CED in association with E & A , C&IT and CISF
The New System was inaugurated by Mr. Atanu Bhowmick, the then Director In-Charge, RSP in a function organized on 30th December,2024 at Hirakud Gate in the presence of Mr. Tarun Misra, ED (HR), Mr. Alok Verma, ED In-Charge (Works), Mr. A K Behuria, ED (F&A), Mr. Anil Kumar, ED (MM), CGMs, HoDs and other Senior officers of the Plant.
