The Repair Shop Electrical {RS (E)} Department of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has successfully executed many enterprising jobs in the last financial year 2024-25 through technical innovation, in-house capabilities and commitment to operational excellence accruing huge savings for the plant. The efforts are aligned with RSP’s strategic focus on cost reduction and maintaining competitiveness in the steel industry.
In a significant engineering breakthrough, the department successfully enhanced the reliability and longevity of the Roller Table VFD-VPI Grade of Hot Strip Mill II by deploying Corona Resistance Wire and Deep Varnish Impregnation (VPI) for the first time in RSP and across SAIL. This pioneering initiative has led to a cost saving of Rs. 3.5 crores, demonstrating a new benchmark in preventive maintenance and asset life extension.
Rising to meet critical operational demands, the RS(E) team also undertook the in-house repair and reconditioning of a 1MVA, 11/0.433 KV AEG make transformer in a record turnaround time of just 10 days, addressing an urgent requirement of the Town Engineering department. This timely intervention not only averted a potential service disruption but also resulted in a direct savings of Rs. 1.5 Crores.
The department also achieved the restoration of the 3.5 MW, 11kV, 1493rpm TPC630H CGL De-scaling Pump #3 Motor at the New Plate Mill, a vital component for seamless production. This complex repair was carried out efficiently, ensuring equipment health and contributing to a savings of Rs. 70 Lakhs altogether. The Revival & reconditioning of Sintering Plant-III nodulizer agitator synchronous motor of 200kw Permanent magnet motor by the RS (E) collective has also led to saving to tune of Rs. 85 lakhs.
These accomplishments highlight the Repair Shop (Electrical) Department’s focus on innovation, cost optimization, and in-house expertise, further reinforcing RSP’s efforts to strengthen its position in the industry.
