The skilled and dedicated team of doctors at Ispat General Hospital (IGH), SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has once again demonstrated exceptional medical expertise by saving the life of a 65-year-old farmer who sustained critical injuries in a power tiller accident.
Param Kishan, a farmer from Bonei, was admitted to IGH on 22nd May, 2025, in an extremely critical condition after his legs got trapped in the blades of a power tiller while working in his agricultural field. He was extricated from the machine by the locals with much difficulty. He had suffered severe injuries to both legs, accompanied by profuse bleeding and dangerously low blood pressure, leaving his condition precarious and posing a serious threat of amputation.
The patient, suffering from multiple injuries, was brought to IGH after other hospitals expressed their inability to manage his critical condition. He was immediately admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at IGH, where he was stabilized and closely monitored for four days. A detailed clinical examination was carried out, and a team of expert doctors led by Dr. Sanjaya Kumar Tiwari, Additional CMO and Head of the Orthopedics Department, took on the challenging case. The team performed four complex surgeries, including repair of the severely damaged femur bone on the left leg, reconstruction of soft tissues, and surgical fixation of other bone injuries. The patient was transfused with six units of blood during the course of his treatment. Necessary anesthesia support was provided by the expert anesthesia team of IGH and Plastic Surgery support for skin grafting was provided by Dr. Ruby Singh, Senior Consultant (Plastic Surgery), IGH.
Following over six weeks of intensive and meticulous medical care, the patient showed remarkable recovery and was discharged from the hospital on 2nd July, 2025. His son, serving with the CRPF and currently posted in Manipur, has expressed profound gratitude to the doctors and staff of IGH for giving his father a new lease of life.
