DMRC SIGNS MoU WITH INDIAN RAILWAYS
DMRC SIGNS MoU WITH INDIAN RAILWAYS; DMRC WILL PROCURE AUTOMATIC WHEEL PROFILE MEASUREMENT SYSTEMS FOR INDIAN RAILWAYS

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and the Indian Railways signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) as per which DMRC will procure state-of-the-art ‘Automatic Wheel Profile Measurement Systems (AWPMS)’ for the Indian Railways. These systems enable the automatic measurement of train wheel profiles and parameters, eliminating human intervention and increasing efficiency and speed.

The MoU was signed in the Rail Bhawan on 4th April 2025 by DMRC’s General Manager, Business Development Sh. Shiv Om Dwivedi and Sh. Jayant Kumar, Executive Director/ Mechanical Engineering (Modernisation & Development), Railway Board from the Indian Railways.

As per the MoU, DMRC shall procure, supply, and install four (04) Automatic Wheel Profile Measurement Systems to Indian Railways. DMRC has already proposed the specifications of the systems and after installation, test and commission them for Indian Railways at the locations specified by them.

The AWPMS system was installed for the first time in DMRC at the Mukundpur Depot in July 2023 to facilitate the Automatic Wheel Profile Measurement. The system is designed for non-contact automatic measurement of geometrical parameters of wheelsets. The system uses a combination of laser scanners, stepper motors, RFID tags, and a Server etc.  All measurements are performed on a real-time basis.

This system eliminates human interface in measurement of the train’s wheel profile. The system also automatically transmits an alert message to the user in case of any abnormalities. DMRC will have to provide the systems to Indian Railways at 4 depots within 18 months time.

This is an important collaborative step forward for DMRC and Indian Railways as this association would open avenues for many more such ventures where there would be scope for exchange of technology, expertise and mutual skill development. DMRC has already entered into a number of such MoUs with many organisations across the country to jointly develop technologies that can further improve the traveling experience of the passengers.
