CERC and Grid India organised Stakeholder Consultation Workshop

The Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) and Grid Corporation of India (Grid-India) jointly organized a Stakeholder Consultation Workshop on the Implementation of Ancillary Services in the Indian Electricity Market. The workshop  witnessed active participation from various stakeholders in the Indian power sector, including the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), generators, State Load Dispatch Centers (SLDCs), Regional Power Committees (RPCs), power exchanges, state utilities, independent power producers (IPPs), and academia, making it a truly collaborative effort towards a sustainable future.

The workshop aimed to address the challenges faced by stakeholders in the implementation of Ancillary Services, such as Short-term Reactive Power Ancillary Services (SRAS) and Time-tabled Reactive Power Ancillary Services (TRAS), and pave the way for a smoother operation of these services in the Indian electricity market.

In his keynote address, Sh. Jishnu Barua, Chairperson of CERC, emphasized the importance of Ancillary Services in enhancing the reliability of the power system. He highlighted the need for collaborative efforts among stakeholders to ensure the effective implementation of these services, which play a critical role in maintaining grid stability and reliability.

During the welcome address, Sh. S. R. Narasimhan, Chairman and Managing Director of Grid Corporation of India, stated, “The workshop is timely as maintaining the reliability of the electricity grid continues to be a key concern.

We have met a record 215.9 GW demand on 18th April 2023 with nearly 20 states touching record daily energy or peak demand.” He further emphasized that resource adequacy in all time horizons, along with planning and maintaining generation reserves, is crucial to ensuring grid reliability.
