Central team  to Study the Mumbai Power Breakdown

Union Minister of State for Power & MNRE Shri R.K .Singh  said that a Central team will visit Mumbai to identify the problem and to find out possible solutions against such break down.

He also said  The power supply (in Mumbai) has been restored substantially. Out of more than  2000 MW which went off, about 1900 MW has been restored, the remaining will be restored soon. The national grid is fine, the problem happened in some parts of the state grid.”

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has ordered an immediate probe into the large-scale outage which is unprecedented for the country’s financial capital.

Mumbai airport and the stock exchange were functional amid the outage.

The central and western line train services have been restored. Western Railway said the breakdown was due to a grid failure at Tata Power. Commuters were seen walking on rail tracks.

“The electric supply is interrupted due to TATAs incoming electric supply failure. Inconvenience is regretted,” Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) had tweeted.

“Due to a technical glitch in Circuit 2 of the Kalva-Padghe powerhouse, the regions between Thane and Mumbai are facing a power cut. Our staff is working on it and power will be restored in an hour or 45 minutes,” Maharashtra Energy Minister Nitin Raut said.

A major grid failure caused a widespread power outage in Mumbai and surrounding areas on Monday, the first such blackout in more than two years that stranded thousands of train passengers and delayed college exams. The two-hour-long blackout prompted Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray to order an inquiry.

The failure was caused by “technical problems” during maintenance work, the energy minister of Maharashtra said in a video message. Power has now been restored to many areas of the city, officials and witnesses said.

Thackeray discussed the issue with Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut and asked him to make immediate efforts to restore supply in the MMR. An official statement said Thackeray took serious note of the power outage and ordered an immediate probe into it.

Mumbai’s international airport and the country’s two main stock exchanges located in the city, the National Stock Exchange and BSE, said they were operating normally.

“Power cut across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region due to grid failure,” the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport agency said on Twitter. Adani Power Ltd and Tata Power Co Ltd, the other two power suppliers to the city of some 20 million, said they had also been affected by the outage.

The state government has asked the suppliers to provide uninterrupted power to hospitals, many of which are treating Covid- infections.
