The BJP has called a “Black Day” in Bengal today to protest the death of its party workers in political clashes in Basirhat, about 70 km from Kolkata, on Saturday. The statewide shutdown was called after the police on Sunday stopped hundreds of BJP workers on highway near Kolkata when they were on their way to party office in the state capital with the bodies of party workers killed in clashes. Political violence flared up in the state over the weekend. At least two BJP workers were killed and a Trinamool worker was shot and hacked to death in the North 24 Paraganas district on Saturday evening. The centre on Sunday expressed concern over “unabated violence” in the state over the past few weeks. In response, the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool government has said the “situation is under control” there were only a few “stray post-poll clashes” in the state.
