Adani Power and Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC), Bhutan’s state-owned utility, have signed key agreements including the Shareholders Agreement and Concession Agreement initiating the development of the 570 MW Wangchhu hydroelectric project in Bhutan, with an in-principle agreement on the Power Purchase Agreement. The project, set to be built on a BOOT basis, involves an investment of approximately Rs 60 billion and aims to begin construction by early 2026, targeting completion within five years. The initiative, endorsed by Bhutan’s Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay and Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani, underscores a strategic partnership to harness Bhutan’s hydropower potential, bolster energy security, and strengthen India-Bhutan relations. The project aligns with Bhutan’s broader goal to add 15,000 MW of hydropower and 5,000 MW of solar capacity by 2040, fostering sustainable development and economic growth. As the first project under a 2025 MoU to develop 5,000 MW of hydropower in Bhutan, it exemplifies the collaborative efforts to accelerate renewable energy infrastructure and future projects under this strategic partnership.
