A 2-day Performance Enhancement Plan (PEP) workshop on ‘Synergising Mines for Plant Operation’ commenced on 23rd July, 2024 at CPTI of SAIL Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP). Around 43 employees including executives from Odisha Group of Mines and Jharkhand Group of Mines and associated Departments of RSP such as Raw Material Handling Plant, Sintering Plant, Blast Furnace and Quality are attending the workshop.
Mr. Tarun Misra, ED (HR) with the additional charge of ED(Projects), Mr. Alok Verma, ED (Mines) and Mr. A K Behuria, ED (F&A) graced the inaugural session of the workshop.
In his address, Mr. Tarun Misra emphasized the crucial role of mines in the integrated steel plant, describing them as the backbone that significantly influences profitability. “We must leverage our captive mines to enhance quality, supply, and sales to optimize the profit of the company with respect to turnover,” he stated.
Mr. Verma expressed his happiness over the organization of the workshop, highlighting its goal of creating synergy between the mines and plant operations. He stressed the importance of quality, focusing on reducing gangue and ensuring the desired physical size of ores to boost productivity and efficiency in iron making.
Mr. Behuria discussed the current market scenario, explaining the factors contributing to the narrowing gap between the NSR and production costs. Noting that 60% of production costs are attributed to producing hot metal, he underscored the mines’ role in ensuring the desired chemical properties and granulation to reduce coke usage and overall production costs.
At the outset Ms. Rajashree Banerjee, CGM (HR & HR-L&D) delivered the welcome address. Ms. Subhasmita Das, AGM (Central Coordination Mines) anchored the inaugural function.
During the day inputs were provided on Company Overview, National and Global position of SAIL with regard to its competitors, Mines Perspective and its Major Issues and Challenges and Customer Expectation. Each of these subjects was discussed at length with an aim to reduce carbon footprint, supply good quality ores and achieve the set targets. The opening day’s sessions were facilitated by experts from Finance, Mines and Research and Control Laboratory. The mines teams engaged in syndicate discussions and prepared action plans with assigned responsibilities and timelines.
The programme is being jointly coordinated by L & D Department and Mines.
