NSG Membership

China becomes a hurdle for India yet again; NSG membership stalled

New Delhi: With China being the exception, seems like everybody – the United States, Russia, France & the United Kingdom, is ready to accept India as a member of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), but the 27th plenary meeting of the same ended in Bern, Switzerland, with the membership still not in the bag. India’s traditional position on the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) on Nuclear Weapons (1970), which defines nuclear-weapon states as only the ones who had built and tested a nuclear weapon before Jan 1st, 1967, has always been either for the five nuclear-weapon states – the United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, France and China – to denuclearize, or for everybody to get equal rights for having nuclear weapons. New Delhi’s initiation is being demurred on the basis that India has not signed the NPT, at the insistence of Beijing. Though, India has a policy of ‘No First Use’ for Nuclear weapons.
