TOP500 List of Supercomputers Declares Chinese Computers Sunway TaihuLight and Tianhe-2 the Fastest Two Machines for the Ninth Time in a Row

New Delhi: Two Chinese supercomputer - Sunway TaihuLight (works at 93 petaflops) & Tianhe-2 (works at 33.9 petaflops) have been declares as the fastest and second fastest machines, respectively, on the whole planet, in accordance to the semiannual Top500 list of Supercomputers. Tinahe-2 which had maintained the lead for previous three consecutive years was dethroned by Sunway TaihuLight, the champion since last June, described as "far and away the most powerful number-cruncher on the planet," by the Top500 list. Followed by the Swiss Piz Daint at the third place with a performance of 19.6 petaflops, it would be “the second time in the 24-year history of the TOP500 list that the US has failed to secure any of the top three positions,” said the TOP500 organizers. "Nevertheless, the US still claims five of the top 10 supercomputers, which is more than any other nation.”
