THDC India Limited (THDCIL) has successfully initiated the Commercial Operation Declaration (COD) process for the Second Unit (250 MW) of the 1000 MW Variable Speed Pumped Storage Plant (PSP) at Tehri, Uttarakhand. This landmark project is India’s first and largest Variable Speed Pumped Storage facility implemented by a Central Public Sector Enterprise. The commencement ceremony was presided over virtually by Shri Pankaj Agarwal (IAS), Secretary, Power, , in the presence of senior officials from the Ministry, NTPC, and THDCIL.
Secretary Pankaj Agarwal, in his address, lauded the THDCIL team for achieving this significant feat and congratulated all personnel and executing agencies on behalf of the Hon’ble Union Minister for Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, Shri Manohar Lal. He highlighted that the successful commissioning reflects THDCIL’s technical strength and unwavering commitment, especially considering the challenging terrain and complexity of the project. He appreciated THDCIL’s role in bringing cutting-edge pumped storage technology to India, and commended the team’s resilience and innovation.
Shri R.K. Vishnoi, Chairman and Managing Director, THDCIL, emphasized that the commencement of the second unit’s COD process signifies a critical step towards energy self-reliance. He noted that with four reversible units of 250 MW each, the Tehri PSP will generate 1000 MW of clean, peaking power, playing a crucial role in grid stabilization and renewable energy integration. Once fully commissioned, the Tehri Hydro Power Complex will have a total capacity of 2400 MW, making it the largest hydropower complex in the country and a strong contributor to India’s sustainable energy vision.
CMD Vishnoi also underlined that this achievement showcases THDCIL’s capability to deliver complex infrastructure with precision, aligning with national goals on energy transition and Net Zero commitments. The project leverages advanced equipment and digital controls supplied by GE Vernova, positioning the Tehri PSP as a benchmark in hydroelectric excellence. This milestone is not just a capacity expansion, but a testament to THDCIL’s strategic foresight, technical excellence, and national service.
