Bengaluru 24, 2025: As the world comes together to celebrate World Water Day, Vedanta Limited reinforces its commitment to water conservation with an ambitious goal of achieving Net Water Positivity by 2030. Demonstrating its leadership in sustainable water management, its businesses: Cairn Oil & Gas, Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL), Sesa Goa, Black Mountain Mines and FACOR mines are already certified as water positive, marking a significant milestone in Vedanta’s journey towards responsible resource stewardship.

At the core of Vedanta’s strategy is a push to reduce freshwater dependency and maximize water conservation. The company has successfully implemented Internal Water Pricing across its business units, ensuring responsible water use. Since FY21, Vedanta has achieved a 3% reduction in freshwater consumption, with HZL leading the charge through a zero-discharge policy and a target to cut freshwater use by 25% by 2025. Additionally, the company’s 60 MLD Sewage Treatment Plant in Udaipur recycles treated water for industrial use, significantly reducing reliance on freshwater sources.

Beyond operational efficiencies, Vedanta is actively transforming lives through Hindustan Zinc’s Drinking Water and Water Augmentation project, which provides potable drinking water in Rajasthan—one of India’s most water-stressed regions. Through partnerships with Neer Amrit LLP, the initiative has deployed RO/ATM water stations and water tankers across six locations and five districts, ensuring safe drinking water for communities. In tandem, the Jeevan Amrit Project by Cairn Oil & Gas has installed 124 RO plants, which supplied 6.9 million liters of safe drinking water and benefitted over 11,429 families in FY 2024.

Commenting on the commitment of Vedanta in conservation and preservation of water as a resource, Deshnee Naidoo, CEO of Vedanta Resources said, “At Vedanta, we recognize that every drop of water is invaluable—not just for our operations, but for the communities and ecosystems in which we operate. Our commitment to achieving Net Water Positivity by 2030 is a testament to our dedication to responsible resource management and environmental stewardship. By integrating cutting-edge conservation technologies, optimizing freshwater use, and investing in community-driven initiatives, we are not only reducing our water footprint but also creating a lasting positive impact. Sustainability is at the heart of our business, and we will continue to set new benchmarks in ESG excellence as we work towards a water-secure future for all.”

Vedanta is also making strides in groundwater recharge and rainwater harvesting. HZL’s Rampura Agucha Mine is implementing a groundwater recharge project with an 8.7 million m³ capacity, while Cairn Oil & Gas is developing rainwater harvesting structures that will contribute 2.5 million m³ of freshwater annually by 2025. Meanwhile, Vedanta Aluminium’s watershed management project in Lanjigarh is ensuring 34.5 lakh m³ of water storage for agriculture and community use.

These ambitious initiatives have positioned Vedanta as a leader in water sustainability. HZL has been certified 2.41x water positive by DNV, and Sesa Goa and Cairn have received Net Water Positive certification from TÜV. With a focus on innovation, large-scale conservation, and community impact, Vedanta is not just conserving water, it is reviving ecosystems, empowering communities, and setting new benchmarks for sustainability.

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has urged people to take the pledge to save every drop of water on World Water Day. On this occasion, he has also appreciated all those individuals and organisations who are working towards saving water.

In a series of tweets, the Prime Minister said;

“Over the last few years, it is heartening to see water conversation become a mass movement, with innovative efforts taking place in all parts of the nation. I would like to appreciate all those individuals and organisations who are working towards saving water.”

“अद्भिः सर्वाणि भूतानि जीवन्ति प्रभवन्ति च।।

On World Water Day, let’s reaffirm our pledge to save every drop of water. Our nation is undertaking numerous measures like Jal Jeevan Mission to ensure water conservation and access to clean drinking water for our citizens.”

“माताओं और बहनों के जीवन को आसान बनाने में जल जीवन मिशन अत्यंत प्रभावी साबित हो रहा है। जन–जन की भागीदारी से घर-घर नल से जल पहुंचाने का संकल्प पूरा होगा।”

“Together, let’s further water conservation and contribute to a sustainable planet. Every drop saved helps our people and enhances our progress.”

The importance of water
World Water Day, held on 22 March every year since 1993, focuses on the importance of freshwater.

World Water Day celebrates water and raises awareness of the 2.2 billion people living without access to safe water. It is about taking action to tackle the global water crisis. A core focus of World Water Day is to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030.

Groundwater, making the invisible, visible
This 2022, the focus is groundwater, an invisible resource with an impact visible everywhere.

Groundwater is water found underground in aquifers, which are geological formations of rocks, sands and gravels that hold substantial quantities of water. Groundwater feeds springs, rivers, lakes and wetlands, and seeps into oceans. Groundwater is recharged mainly from rain and snowfall infiltrating the ground. Groundwater can be extracted to the surface by pumps and wells.

Life would not be possible without groundwater. Most arid areas of the world depend entirely on groundwater. Groundwater supplies a large proportion of the water we use for drinking, sanitation, food production and industrial processes.

It is also critically important to the healthy functioning of ecosystems, such as wetlands and rivers.

We must protect them from overexploitation – abstracting more water than is recharged by rain and snow – and the pollution that currently haunts them, since it can lead to the depletion of this resource, extra-costs of processing it, and sometimes even preventing its use.

Exploring, protecting and sustainably using groundwater will be central to surviving and adapting to climate change and meeting the needs of a growing population.
