A team of Amity Center for Air Pollution Control (ACAPC) headed by Prof PCS Devara and Dr Sanjeev Agrawal, has carried out a detailed study of the impact of nationwide Janta Curfew on 22nd March 2020 in Air Qaulity in Delhi and CNR.

As per the study it has been found that there has been a drastic reduction of up to 50% in the Air Quality Parameters such as PM10, PM2.5, PM1 and Gaseous particles of NO2, SO2 CO & OZONE as well as in Volatile Organic Compound VOC/BTX such as Benzene, Toulene, Xylene and NH3. The Amity AXAPC team looked at 24 hourly averages of ambient Air Quality from the averaged quality monitors from CPCB monitoring stations in and around Delhi & NCR.

It was revealed that on 22/03/2020 of PM10, PM2.5, NO2, SO2 CO, OZONE, had measured 98, 62, 23, 13, 08, 40 µg/m3 (Except CO-mg/m3) respectively and VOC/BTX – Benzene, Toulene, Xylene and NH3 measured 10, 18, 25 and 11 µg/m3 respectively almost 50% that of the levels on 21st March.. Amity University Haryana AUH has a highly sophisticated Air Quality Monitoring Station at its campus at Pachgaon, Manesar that itself looks at the Air Pollution parameters at the doorsteps of the millennium city of Gurugram. AUH further has the NASA Aeronet Monitor that looks at ultrafine aerosol particles and their concentration in air. These particles can travel great distances, even across continent weather currents.

“It is important to keep the ambient Air Quality in healthy conditions during the Coronavirus crisis as the respiratory diseases and heart strokes are greatly impacted by degraded Air Quality” says Prof PB Sharma, Vice Chancellor, Amity University Haryana. The safe limit for Air Quality as per the WHO is to keep the particulate matter PM2.5 below 20mg/m3 while India during most of time of the year records PM 2.5 higher than 100mg/m3 which is 5 times higher than the global safe limit.

The nationwide Janta Curfew undoubtedly brought the particulate matter such as PM2.5 to 62 mg/m3. It may be mentioned that Air Pollution has been found to harm human being from head to toe. The ultrafine particles of particulate matter and Volatile organic Compounds such of Benzene and ammonia pass through the lungs and are carried into the bloodstream to expose virtually to all cells in the body.

As per WHO report an estimated 7 million deaths worldwide are associated with Air Pollution and this cause of mortality due to Air Pollution accounts for 11.6% of all global deaths. WHO further recognizes that Air Pollution is a critical risk factor for non-communicable diseases (NCDs), causing an estimated one quarter (24%) of all adult deaths from heart disease, 25% from stroke, 43% from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and 29% from lung cancer.

Mumbai witnessed its second-coldest minimum temperature of this winter today due to cold winds from northern parts of the country, the weather department data showed.

The minimum temperature at the Santacruz weather station dropped to 18.6 degrees Celsius, which was five degrees Celsius below normal, while Colaba recorded 16 degrees Celsius, three degrees Celsius below normal.

On Wednesday, Mumbai had recorded a minimum temperature of 18 degrees Celsius. This means a six degrees Celsius drop has been witnessed within 24 hours, the weather department said.

On January 17, Mumbai had recorded the minimum temperature at 11.4 degrees Celsius, which is the coldest January morning since 2012 and coldest this season so far. The weather bureau said cool weather was likely to continue through the weekend.

“Mumbai and surrounding areas recorded one of the coldest mornings again with minimum temperatures going far below the benchmark at many places especially in suburbs. Over the last two days, the weather pattern due to cool northerly winds has allowed temperatures to drop below the normal mark. This trend of cold breeze during early hours of the day is expected to continue for at least three days,” said KS Hosalikar, deputy director general, western region, India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Heavy rains lashed parts of the national capital on Tuesday morning following which humidity levels shot up to 100 per cent even as the weatherman has predicted hailstorm in various parts towards the evening.

“The minimum temperature recorded at 8.30 am was 10.5 degrees Celsius, two notches above normal, while the humidity level was 100 per cent,” a MeT official said.

While the Safdarjung observatory recorded 5.7 mm rainfall, the Palam observatory received 4.4 mm rainfall. The reading at Lodhi Road, Aya Nagar and Ridge Area observatory was 6.3, 5.4 and 3 mm respectively.

The weatherman has predicted thunderstorm and hailstorm in parts of Delhi towards the evening.

An AQI between 0-50 is considered ‘good’, 51-100 ‘satisfactory’, 101-200 ‘moderate’, 201-300 ‘poor’, 301-400 ‘very poor’ and 401-500 ‘severe’.

As many as 14 trains were reported running late due to low visibility and other operational reasons in the Northern Railway region.

Meanwhile, the air quality in Delhi was recorded as ‘very poor’, as per the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). As on Monday, the minimum temperature in Delhi was 8.5 degrees Celsius, a notch above normal, while the maximum settled at 8.5 degrees Celsius. The relative humidity shot up to 100 per cent during the day.

The weather office issues colour-coded warnings to alert people ahead of severe or hazardous weather that has the potential to cause “damage, widespread disruption or danger to life”. Yellow, the least dangerous of all the weather warnings, indicates the possibility of severe weather.

A thick blanket of fog was seen in Delhi and neighbouring cities this morning. Airlines have also issued an advisory for passengers taking flights from Indira Gandhi International Airport.

Thirty trains are running late due to low visibility. Though no flights have been cancelled, but three flights to Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International airport have been diverted. The airport authorities have asked the air passengers to contact their respective airlines for flight updates. Flights are operating at the airport under CAT III B conditions, which means that the runway visual range (RVR) is between 50 metres and 175 metres.

The temperature this morning fell to 2.2 degree Celsius from 2.8 degree Celsius on Sunday, according to the monitoring unit on south Delhi’s Lodhi Road.

The air quality in the national capital is very bad with the Anand Vihar observatory recording air quality index (AQI) of 462 and the Okhla Phase-2 centre reporting an AQI of 494.

Six people, including two children, were killed when their car skidded off the road and fell into a canal in Greater Noida, apparently due to fog, the police said this morning.

At Delhi airport, CAT III B compliant aircraft are currently able to land using instrument landing system or ILS, officials said. The airlines have asked people to stay in touch for updated flight information. Three flights have been diverted so far.

Since December 14, the national capital has been experiencing “severe cold days” with the average minimum temperature on Sunday morning being recorded at 3.4 degrees Celsius, four notches below what is considered normal for this time of the year.

The mean temperature for December 2019 till Sunday was 19.07 degrees Celsius and it is “most likely to become second coldest December since 1901”, behind 17.3 degrees Celsius in December 1997, the Met department said.

Humidity levels oscillated between 64 per cent to 100 per cent, it added.

For Monday, the weatherman had predicted dense fog in the morning with cold day at a few places in Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR).

Heavy rainfall is likely to lash Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and West Uttar Pradesh today.

The weather forecasting agency said isolated places over Konkan, Goa, West Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, East Rajasthan and Gangetic West Bengal are also expected to witness incessant rains later in the day.

In Uttar Pradesh, the IMD said rain/thundershowers and lightning are very likely to occur in the next three hours at isolated places over Jhansi, Jalaun, Rampur, Bareilly, Raebareli, Pratapgarh, Moradabad districts and adjoining areas.

Intense spells of rain are very likely to occur in Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Palghar, Ratnagiri and Nashik in the next four hours, the forecaster observed.

Northeastern states such as Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram and Tripura are also likely to witness heavy spells of rain until July 27.

“By July 29, the Monsoon Trough will once again start shifting to North that would lead to the revival of Monsoon activities over Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh. Hence, we can say that the northeastern states will continue to witness good rain and thundershowers for the rest of July,” said Skymet, a private weather forecasting agency.

Strong winds of speed hovering around 40-50 kmph are likely to prevail over southwest and the west-central Arabian Sea. Rough to very rough sea conditions are very likely to prevail along and off south Tamil Nadu coast, it added.
