Bengaluru, 02 May 2025: Nifty Waves Index was launched today at the World Audio Visual & Entertainment Summit (WAVES) 2025 in Mumbai by Hon’ble Chief Minister of Maharashtra Shri Devendra Fadnavis. The Nifty Waves index comprises 43 listed companies that belong to the media, entertainment and gaming industry.

With a diverse ecosystem spanning film, television, digital platforms, music and gaming, the Indian Media & Entertainment industry is undergoing a dynamic transformation, blending creative innovation with rapid technological adoption. Promoted by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (Government of India) and inaugurated by Hon’ble Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi, the World Audio Visual & Entertainment Summit, known by the acronym WAVES, is a key forum for promoting discussions, collaboration, and innovation in the Media & Entertainment industry. The event brings together industry leaders, stakeholders, and innovators from across the world to discuss prospects, challenges, promote trade to India, and influence the sector’s future. WAVES is a groundbreaking event designed to propel India’s Media & Entertainment (M&E) industry to even greater heights.

The weight of each stock in the Nifty Waves Index is based on free float market capitalization subject to a cap of 5%. The base date for the index is April 01, 2005, and the base value is 1000. The index will be reconstituted semi-annually and rebalanced on a quarterly basis.

HMD Announces Plans to Launch Direct-to-Mobile Phones in India Ahead of Field Trials

Bengaluru, April 28, 2025 – HMD in collaboration with Free Stream Technologies (incubated at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur) and other D2M partners announces launch plans underway to meet mass consumer demand for Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) phones ahead of large-scale field trials in India. The announcement will be made at the World Audio Visual & Entertainment Summit (WAVES) 2025 held at Jio World Centre, Mumbai.

Direct-to-Mobile is a breakthrough Next-Generation Broadcasting technology that delivers OTT & live TV, video, audio, and text messages directly to mobile phones without requiring Wi-Fi or internet service. This aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for Viksit Bharat (economic transformation of India) and supports the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Design in India’ initiatives.

Giving a boost to the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Design in India’ efforts, low cost feature phones, smartphones and tablets are powered by Tejas Networks. This technology has undergone extensive testing in live networks by Prasar Bharati in collaboration with IIT Kanpur and Tejas Networks for several years.

The implementation of D2M technology will enable Indian consumers to access entertainment, sports, educational programming, and emergency alerts directly on their mobile devices through terrestrial TV broadcast airwaves. This technology has been under development and testing in India for several years, with HMD now positioning itself as one of the first device manufacturers ready to bring this capability to market.

As part of the Create in India Challenges under Pillar 4 (Films) of the World Audio Visual & Entertainment Summit (WAVES), this competition invites participants to reimagine iconic scenes or bring fresh perspectives through the art of trailer-making. Focused on filmmaking, production, and globalization, this initiative provides a dynamic platform for creators to showcase their storytelling skills.

Organized by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) and Reskilll, in collaboration with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and Netflix as the creative partner, the competition aims to inspire and empower the next generation of content creators.

Taking place from May 1-4, 2025, at the Jio World Convention Centre & Jio World Gardens in Mumbai, WAVES 2025 will be a landmark event for the Media & Entertainment (M&E) industry. Bringing together industry leaders, creators, and innovators, it will serve as a global platform for discussions on emerging trends, opportunities, and challenges while showcasing India’s creative excellence on the world stage.
