The death toll in accidents involving rain and flood has reached 29 in Bihar. Thousands of people are searching for safe havens in rains. The extent to which Bihar is helpless in front of rain can be gauged from the fact that in many areas of the capital Patna, there is 6 to 7 feet of water on the roads while People are forced to build a hideout on the roofs. Along with the NDRF, the SDRF team is also involved in the rescue. the Meteorological Department estimates that there may be relief from rain in the state soon.

The number of dead in rain-related accidents in the state is increasing. According to the Bihar State Disaster Management Authority, “So far 29 people have died in the state due to rain.” The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert in 14 districts. However, the department has forecast that there may be some relief from the rain on Monday.

All schools and colleges in Patna and Darbhanga are closed till Tuesday.
The Bihar government has demanded two choppers from the Indian Air Force to airlift people stranded in the flood-affected areas and drop food packets. Along with this, the government has also demanded to give water dispenser from the Air Force.

There are worse conditions in Patna. The entire city has been transformed into a big lake. Lower areas like Rajendra Nagar and Pataliputra Colony have been flooded. Many hospitals, shops, markets in the city have been inundated. Traffic has been badly affected. It has become difficult for people to leave the house.

Thousands of people are stranded in flood waters after torrential rains. Between 6 and 7 feet of waterlogging, people’s water and ration have been exhausted. Except the first floor of the house, people are now taking shelter on the second floor and roofs. On Sunday, 150 girls were evacuated from Girls Hostel in Rajendranagar.

All schools and junior colleges in Mumbai and neighbouring areas are closed today after the weather office forecast “extremely heavy rainfall” over the next 48 hours, the government said.
The weather office has issued a red alert–indicating “extremely heavy rainfall”–for Mumbai and neighbouring Raigad, weather officials said.

“In view of heavy rainfall forecasts, a holiday is declared for all schools & junior colleges in Mumbai, Thane and Konkan region today. District collectors in other parts of Maharashtra to decide, based on local conditions,” Maharashtra Minister of School Education Ashish Shelar tweeted.

Mumbai’s suburbs received heavy rain on Wednesday night. Versova recorded 50 mm rain within three hours, KS Hosalikar, Deputy Director General of Meteorology, IMD, Mumbai said.

Apart from Mumbai, Palghar and Thane are also expected to receive heavy to very heavy rain.

Mumbai has received heavy rain this monsoon, leading to delayed flights, traffic jams and flooding of homes.

The city’s streets regularly flood during the monsoon, which runs from June until September or October, and which provides India with most of its annual rainfall.

Almost every monsoon, Mumbai struggles to cope with the chaos caused by the rain. The suburban trains – the city’s lifeline – are affected and low-lying areas get flooded.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted heavy rainfall and has issued a red rain alert for Mumbai and Raigad districts. This indicates a precipitation of more than 204 mm in 24 hours starting Thursday morning.

However, Mumbai would receive heavy rainfall on Friday, but Raigad will continue to receive extremely heavy showers that day also, the official said.

Education minister Ashish Shelar has announced that all schools and junior colleges in Thane, Konkan and Mumbai region will remain shut as the weather department forecast a red alert in these regions. He also asked district collectors to keep an eye on the developments.

Heavy rains pounded Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra on Wednesday, causing floods in low-lying areas and cancellation of local train services, delaying flights and slowing road traffic.

The current spells over the last 24 hours is expected to continue till Friday, and has already brought the city’s public transport system to a standstill. Mumbai’s suburban trains, the city’s lifeblood, stood on their inundated tracks for most of the day, leaving commuters to wade through deep water across tracks to seek alternative arrangements. Other options such as ride hailing services by Uber and Ola too largely remained unavailable and the few which were plying remained beyond the reach of many, thanks to spiralling “surge pricing” charged by the operators.

Both incoming and outgoing flights from the Mumbai airport were delayed as heavy rains affected operations. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), many weather stations in Mumbai have recorded more than 20mm of rainfall in last 24 hours and there could be another heavy spell of rains in the next 24 hours, especially over north Konkan and central Maharashtra. However, a red alert for Mumbai has been withdrawn for Thursday.

While the forecast for the next 24 hours offers relief for daily commuters, the water logging brings the focus back on Mumbai’s inadequate and antiquated infrastructure. While commuters in the Maximum City have grown accustomed to the daily pangs of inordinate traffic snarls due to excessive congestion in the arterial roads, the city’s infrastructure upgrade plans continue to face delays due to myriad issues, both regulatory, political and financial. The Brihanmumbai Stormwater Disposal System which was originally designed in 1896 is yet to see full implementation of next recommendations of expert committees. The list of measures suggested in the immediate aftermath of devastating floods of 2005 include completion of cross-drainage works and removal of obstruction to storm water drains, de-silting of waterways, clean up of debris, effective waste disposal and pragmatic and decisive approach to dealing with encroachments in the embankments.

Work on the ₹14,000 crore coastal road project which could potentially cut the pressure on the city’s roads has been stayed by the Mumbai high court till fresh environment clearances and notifications are obtained after a proper Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).

People in Mumbai woke up to a rainy morning today with water-logging being reported in some parts of the city. Areas like Sion, Parel, Dadar and Byculla received heavy rain in the wee hours.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has already issued an ‘orange alert’ for Mumbai and Thane for today. IMD has predicted that the two cities will receive heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places. However, the rain is likely to subside by Thursday to just ‘heavy rainfall’, and by Friday and Saturday, it will further reduce to light rains, IMD said.

Hours of incessant rainfall in Mumbai and adjoining districts led to water-logging in several parts of the city on Wednesday morning. Water-logging occurred in the areas near King Circle railway station and Gandhi Market. IMD has predicted that the maximum and minimum temperatures are most likely to remain around 29 degrees Celsius and 24 degrees Celsius respectively.

In weather terminology, a forecast of ‘heavy rain’ indicates rainfall ranging from 64.5mm to 115.5 mm while ‘very heavy rainfall’ indicates rainfall between 115.6mm and 204.4 mm. Similar alerts have also been issued for other parts of Maharashtra. The IMD has issued an ‘orange alert’ for Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudhurg. An orange alert is issued when IMD forecasts weather conditions that would disrupt daily life.
