Bengaluru, 18 November 2025: The University of Wollongong (UOW) marks a momentous milestone this year as it celebrates 50 years of academic excellence, research innovation, and global expansion. From its origins in Wollongong, Australia, in 1975, UOW has grown into a world-class university with a vibrant presence across Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, China, Dubai, and now in India. Over the past five decades, the university has transformed from a small regional institution into a global education leader, recognised among the top 1% of universities worldwide and home to over 36,000 students at its main campus in Australia.

The 50-year celebrations, themed “50 Years of Impact,” honour UOW’s journey through initiatives such as 50 Artists, 50 Years of Research, and 50 Years of Global Expansion, each reflecting the university’s enduring commitment to excellence and innovation. These celebrations have been taking place across UOW’s international campuses, highlighting its strong academic foundation and expanding global footprint.

In India, the 50-year milestone held special significance as it coincided with the first anniversary of UOW India at GIFT City. The celebrations brought together students, faculty, alumni, and industry partners, symbolising the university’s growing role in shaping India’s higher education landscape. The event featured an inspiring showcase of UOW’s global alumni, industry partners, and career researchers, celebrating creativity, research, and the power of global collaboration. Students had the opportunity to engage with international alumni and corporate leaders, gaining valuable insights into the global workforce and understanding how a UOW degree can open doors worldwide.

UOW India also announced the upcoming launch of future-ready programs designed to meet evolving industry demands in emerging areas such as Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Machine Learning, Business Analytics, Operations and Supply Chain, and Finance. These programs are being developed in close collaboration with an industry advisory panel, ensuring that students graduate with skills that are relevant, adaptable, and aligned with market expectations. The aim is not only to prepare students for their first job but to equip them for lifelong success in a rapidly changing world.

Over the past five decades, UOW’s global success has been built on the strength of its research and its ability to stay ahead of industry trends. Its research-led teaching ensures that programs (including those offered in India) are informed by innovation and real-world impact. Students can apply for a range of Master’s programs in Computing (Data Analytics), Financial Technology (FinTech) and Financial Technology (FinTech) Extension.

Orientation for the new batch will be held from 7 to 13 July 2025 with lectures commencing from 14 July 2025 on campus.

In the ongoing effort to provide globally relevant and career-focused education in India, UOW has partnered with various Indian organizations, including IBM India, a technology and consulting firm, ANZ Bank, a multinational financial and banking services company headquartered in Melbourne, Afthonia Labs, a FinTech incubator and Odoo, a business software suite, and many more to enhance education and industry readiness in fields like FinTech, AI/ML, Cyber Security and cloud computing.

Under the government of India NEP 2020, the Australian varsity has also partnered with Indian universities across the nation. Universities such as Gujarat Technological University, Sardar Vallabhbhai Global University, NMIMS Mumbai, Karnavati University, Institute of Advance Research, Gardi Vidyapith and a few others in Gujarat.

Similarly, Manav Rachna University, Amity University (Jaipur), Chitkara University, Chandigarh University and Lovely Professional University in the north. The south has seen Rama Devi Women’s university, Duxford International Business School, SRM University, VIT and many more.  These partnerships are focused on establishing strategic academic collaborations while incorporating the NEP2020 initiatives.

Bengaluru | 22 January 2025 – The University of Wollongong (UOW) India Campus has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Afthonia Labs, a Bengaluru based incubator for early-stage FinTech startups. The MoU was signed at the UOW India campus by Nimay Kalyani, Campus Director of UOW India, and Tanul Mishra, CEO, Afthonia Labs, an incubator based in Bengaluru for early-stage FinTech startups, to foster innovation and provide hands-on experience with curated courses in the FinTech sector.

The UOW campus will offer courses in Finance and FinTech, as well as Computing Science and Information Systems, in collaboration with Afthonia Labs to enhance the university’s role as a leader in FinTech education. Through the partnership, UOW India students will gain access to Afthonia Labs’ expertise, with guest lectures delivered by industry professionals, effectively bridging the gap between academia and industry.

Key highlights of the MoU include opportunities for student internships and the appointment of Afthonia Labs representatives as academic advisors at UOW India. Additionally, the agreement facilitates student placements within Afthonia Labs, enabling students to kick-start their careers in the growing FinTech sector.
