Power Minister inaugurates India’s first VRFB system at NETRA

Union Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, Shri Manohar Lal visited NTPC’s R&D Centre, NETRA at Greater Noida and inaugurated India’s largest and first MWh-scale Vanadium Redox Flow Battery (VRFB) system of 3 MWh capacity in the presence of Shri Pankaj Agarwal, Secretary (Power) and Shri Gurdeep Singh, CMD, NTPC along with senior officials from MoP and NTPC.

This milestone project marks a major step forward in the nation’s journey towards long-duration energy storage (LDES) solutions, enhancing renewable energy integration and grid resilience. Hon’ble Minister also visited various demonstration projects and appreciated NETRA team for their innovative steps in the area of Energy Security and Energy Transition.

Shri Manohar Lal, Union Minister of Power, Housing and Urban Affairs, released a Rs.50 Commemorative Coin to mark 50 years of NHPC Limited at a ceremony held in New Delhi on 6th November 2025. The event was graced by Shri Pankaj Agarwal, Secretary (Power), Ministry of Power, Shri Bhupender Gupta, CMD, NHPC, and Shri Uttam Lal, Director (Personnel),

NHPC. Speaking on the occasion, the Union Minister congratulated NHPC for its five decades of remarkable service, stating that the coin symbolizes the Government of India’s

recognition of NHPC’s enduring legacy, resilience, and its strategic contribution to the nation’s energy self-reliance. He also unveiled a special comic book titled *“Chhota Bheem aur Bada Bandh”*, designed to spread awareness about the importance and benefits of hydropower among children and the general public.

Expressing gratitude, Shri Bhupender Gupta, CMD, NHPC, thanked the Union Minister and the Ministry of Power for their guidance and support, noting that the commemorative coin is a tribute to NHPC’s illustrious journey and achievements. Over the past 50 years, NHPC has implemented landmark hydropower projects in challenging terrains while diversifying into solar, wind, and green hydrogen, establishing itself as a 100% Green Energy Company. With an installed capacity of over 8,333 MW across 30 power stations and another 9,704 MW under construction, NHPC continues to play a pivotal role in advancing India’s clean energy transition and strengthening the nation’s energy security.

In the august presence of Union Minister of Power & Housing & Urban Affairs Shri Manohar Lal, the 2nd Unit (660 MW) of 1320 MW Khurja Super Thermal Power Project was inaugurated & declared commercially operational through virtual mode. The Hon’ble Minister congratulated CMD of THDC, Shri R.K Vishnoi and the team for their dedicated efforts towards this project. With the 1st Unit operational since 26 Jan 2025, both units are now running, adding 1320 MW to the nation’s power capacity. Despite challenges like COVID-19, this milestone reflects the dedication of our engineers & the spirit of New India in delivering projects on time and strengthening energy security.

Union Minister of Power and New & Renewable Energy Shri R K Singh , addressed the ‘Green Finance Summit’ organised by REC Lindiaon the sidelines of the CEM14/MI-8 meeting in Goa yesterday .Minister said we never faced the issue of financing even though India has gone through a phase of rapid expansion in renewables.

“Today our renewable capacity is approx 170 GW. Our tendering and bidding system is transparent. We will continue getting funding for our green projects because of the transparency in our process. We will remain the biggest market in renewables outside China.”
