At a time when well-being and work-life balance are becoming increasingly important, travel time has a major impact on employee retention. What all employees have in common is that they increasingly dislike their morning and evening commutes. Studies and reports show that shorter commute times lead to employees working longer for a company.

The impact of commuting has a major influence on employee retention. Travel time is now an increasingly important factor, as most job seekers prefer travel time over the company when looking for a new job. In addition, job seekers worldwide have turned down a dream job because they found the travel time too long. A commute time of more than 90 minutes per day to get to work and back home leads workers to look for a new opportunity closer to home. The same is true for the many employers who lose their dream employees based on location and commute time alone. With increased migration to cities and never-ending traffic woes, travel times to the office are expected to increase in the coming years.

Long daily commutes affect workers physically and mentally and contribute to stress, depression, and anxiety. For years, people in India’s major cities have taken long commutes to work, spending nearly 2 to 3 hours on their daily commute – and still do. For years, job platforms have remained stuck in the old traditional approaches and have never thought about how they can help solve one of the biggest problems faced by job seekers. A survey by Ernst and Young shows that nine out of ten workers want flexibility in terms of where they work, and when given the choice, 40% of workers surveyed choose a work location closer to public transportation

For more than a decade we have been hearing about work-life balance and employee wellbeing as one of the most important corporate agendas, but we have seen little action in this area. At a time when well-being and work-life balance are becoming increasingly important, travel time to and from work is becoming a bigger and bigger annoyance for employees. So big, in fact, that it not only leads to unhappy and unproductive employees but even to them leaving your company.

Employers are busy filling their vacancies and have never really looked at how these daily long commutes affect their employees, which in turn is one of the main reasons for low productivity. The other reason for low talent retention is long commutes and burnouts. A shorter commute makes employees happy, and stay longer in the company and thus reduces the cost of recruitment and new hires. As per the data from the Air Quality Index (AQI), daily long commutes also add to pressure on the public infrastructure and add to the ever-increasing pollution affecting the health of employees in metro cities.

In light of the increasing attrition of workers due to work-life balance issues caused by longer commute times, Indian HRTech start-up InRadius has launched a job search platform that enables workers to find their dream jobs in major cities close to their homes, reducing the unproductive long hours they spend commuting to work every day. Currently, the platform is operational in Mumbai (including Mumbai metropolitan areas), Pune, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Delhi NCR, and plans to expand its operations to all major Indian metropolitan cities in the next 9 months.

“Through InRadius, we are committed to revolutionizing the job search experience and empowering individuals to find opportunities closer to their homes. Our goal is to create a positive impact on people’s lives by reducing long commutes and achieving a better work-life balance. We are excited about our ambitious targets and confident in our team’s expertise to make a meaningful difference in the job market,” said Darshan Vyas, Founder & CEO of InRadius.

InRadius aims to reach 1 million registered jobseekers, onboard over 2000 companies, and have 10,000 active jobs on its platform by the end of March 2024. Looking to the future, InRadius has set long-term goals that encompass its vision of transforming the job search landscape and promoting work-life balance. These goals include becoming the first choice for Indians looking for a job close to home, being the preferred talent search platform for start-ups and SMEs, and addressing the problem of long commutes to work globally.

InRadius primarily targets professionals who face long commutes every day, young professionals looking for a job close to home, and companies that value a better work-life balance. InRadius wants to be perceived by its key stakeholders as a company that is revolutionizing the job and talent search and profoundly changing people’s lives by reducing commute times, easing the burden on public infrastructure, and lowering carbon emissions at the same time.

The Indian Railways is upgrading the Sleeper Class and unreserved General Class coaches as AC (air-conditioned) coaches. This will allow the Railways to roll out all-AC trains, without taking away the option of low-cost travel for the public, said officials. Officials said the upgraded Sleeper Class coach will be an “economical” AC 3-tier Class, in between what is now the AC 3-tier Class and non-AC Sleeper Class.

Sources said the Rail Coach Factory in Kapurthala has been entrusted with the job of making the prototype of the upgraded Sleeper Class coach, which will have 83 berths instead of the current 72. Internally, the upgraded coach is being termed as “AC 3-tier Tourist Class”, an official said.

“It is like an affordable AC 3-tier Class,” said a senior official, adding that the idea is to make AC trains affordable for all.

In the first phase, about 230 such coaches are being manufactured. Each coach is estimated to cost about Rs 2.8-3 crore, which is about 10 per cent more than the manufacturing cost of the current AC 3-tier Class coach. However, with more berths and expected demand, the new ‘economical’ AC 3-tier Class is estimated to bring in more earnings.

The unreserved General Class coaches are also set to get an upgrade as a 100-seater AC Class. While the design for this is being finalised, officials working on the project told that the initial design had provision for 105 seats per coach.

The last time the government tried to roll out an economical AC 3-tier Class was during the UPA-I government (2004-09), when Lalu Prasad was the Railways Minister. Introduced in the Garib Rath Express trains as ‘AC Economy Class’, a side-middle berth was added to increase capacity and profitability. However, passengers complained of discomfort and overcrowding, and these coaches were eventually discontinued.
In the new ‘economical AC 3-tier Class’, more space has been created by shifting the electrical units, and by doing away with the compartments for storing linen sets.

As reported by The Indian Express earlier, the Railways has decided to stop distribution of blankets and linen sets in AC coaches, even post-Covid.

Sources said the idea behind the upgrade is to gradually move towards an all-AC model, although a formal decision on this is yet to be taken. Meanwhile, the existing stock of non-AC coaches will continue to operate, officials said. “Whether these will be phased out eventually is a call yet to be taken,” said an official.

The Indian Railways said that no regular train service will be resumed till 12 th august and it would refund all tickets booked for regular trains between July 1 and August 12 as coronavirus cases in the country surged.
Only special trains announced in May and June will run, the railways said.

Rail services, apart from the movement of some essential cargo, were abruptly halted in late March ahead of efforts to contain the virus that froze almost all economic activity, putting crores out of work overnight.

Earlier this month, the railways had increased the number of special passenger trains running in the country from 30 to over 200. These include 15 pairs of trains running on the Rajdhani routes since May 12 and 100 pairs operating since June 1.

With coronavirus cases continuing to rise and the uncertainty over when normal services will resume, officials said they wanted to refund all tickets booked for regular trains. Before the lockdown, the Railways operated around 12,000 trains every day, transporting 2 crore people.

The limited special suburban services which began recently in Mumbai to ferry essential services personnel identified by the local authorities will also continue to run, officials said.

The Delhi Metro services will remain completely closed till 31 March, 2020, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) declared.

However, the metro services will operated for essential internal operational maintenance activities during this duration and security of the system will continue to be taken care of by CISF, DMRC said in a statement.
Noida-Greater Noida metro, city bus services will also be suspended till March 31 with immediate effect, declared NMRC.

Earlier, on account of nation-wide ‘Janta Curfew’ that was observed on Sunday from 7 am to 9 pm after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal, the Delhi Metro had decided to keep its services closed on 22 March 2020. “In the wake of ‘Janata Curfew’ to be observed this Sunday i.e, on 22nd March 2020, DMRC has decided to keep its services closed. The move is aimed at encouraging public to stay indoors and maintain social distancing, which is essential in the fight against Covid-19,” DMRC said in a tweet. In a statement, DMRC also said, “Random thermal scanning of passengers will be carried out at all metro stations.”

Moreover, the Cabinet Secretary on Sunday reviewed Covid-19 status with Chief Secretaries of states and a slew of decisions were taken, which included lockdown in 75 districts across the country affected by corona virus. These districts have either reported confirmed cases or casualties relating to Covid-19. Only essential services will be allowed in these 75 districts.

It also decided that all trains will be stopped till 31 March, no metro rail and inter-state buses will operate till month-end.

Also, the decision to stop inter-state public transport was taken because the government noted a trend of people, especially migrant labourers working in big cities, scrambling to take trains to go back to their villages in states in the East and other parts of the country.

Earlier in the day, the Railways announced suspension of all trains from March 22 till March 31. Only goods trains will be allowed to ply during this period.

Meanwhile, the West Bengal government put Kolkata under lock down till March 31 to control COVID-19. The Punjab government also announced its decision to enforce lock down in the entire state till March 31.

Railway Protection Force (RPF) of Indian Railways has taken various steps for administrative reform in the year 2019.

Following are the major reforms ushered in to improve the working of RPF:-

• Consequent on grant of Organized Group ‘A’ status (OGAS) to the Group ‘A’ officer cadre in Railway Protection Force (RPF), the Ministry of Railways has notified the name of the Group ‘A’ cadre mentioned above as Indian Railway Protection Force Service (IRPFS) vide letter no. 2013/E(GR)1/36/10 (Part-I) dated 30.12.2019. The nomenclature of Group ‘A’ gazetted cadre of RPF as IRPFS does not, in any way, change the name of the force (RPF). The character of the force constituted under RPF (Amendment) Act 1985 (an Act of Parliament) as a statutory Armed Force of the Union remains unchanged.

• Constables having received the benefit of 1st MACP/2nd MACP will wear ribbons (V) One Stripe /Two Stripes respectively on the right upper arm of their uniform. This will boost the morale of RPF personnel who remain in the rank of Constables for substantial period as they will look forward to addition of stripes in their uniform without waiting for their promotion to the rank of Head Constables.

• The rules and guidelines for functioning of RPF have been compiled as Establishment Manual and Crime Manual superseding all guidelines in force. Soft copies of these manuals have been uploaded in the RPF webpage to make them easily accessible to all RPF personnel. This will streamline the functioning of RPF.

• With ever increasing threat to railway system from Left Wing Extremists, terrorist/subversive elements, it is imperative that Railway Protection Force remains better trained and prepared to face growing challenges to railway security. For this very objective, setting up of a separate Commando unit, known as CORAS (Commandos for Railway Security), was announced by Minister of Railways and Commerce & Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal on 14th August 2019.

Vision of CORAS is to develop world level capabilities of specialized response for any situation pertaining to damage, disturbance, disruption of train operations, attack/hostage/hijack/disaster situations in railway areas. The training of RPF commandos includes training in physical endurance, Unarmed Combat, Latest weapons training, Disaster management, Anti Terrorist Operations among others. RPF commandos are being utilised for securing railway stations, escorting trains and railway area protection in highly vulnerable areas.

The air conditioned local train’ finally became a reality on 25 December, 2017, when the country’s first & only air-conditioned suburban train started its maiden run from Borivali and headed to its destination at Churchgate.

The ‘air conditioned local train’ with state-of-the-art security features consists of automatic door closing system, talk back system & fire fighting system in each coach, etc. Though the ridership of the AC local was minimal in the early days but slowly & steadily it started gaining momentum and became a major hit among the commuters during the sweltering summer months.

The AC local train initially was running between Churchgate & Virar section with total 12 services (6 services in UP & 6 services in DOWN direction) on all days except on Saturday & Sunday, when it is taken up for maintenance but w.e.f. 14th September, 2019, it is also running on Saturdays & Sundays, making available the cool journey to Mumbaikars on all 7 days of the week.

Out of these 12 services, 8 run as fast local trains between Churchgate & Virar, while 3 fast services run between Churchgate & Borivali. The remaining one service runs as slow service from Mahalaxmi to Borivali, which stops at all intermediate stations. For the convenience of ladies, senior citizens & Divyanjans, separate coaches have been reserved for Ladies and similarly seats have also been earmarked for Senior Citizens/Divyangs.

The 1st and 12th coach from Churchgate end are reserved as Ladies coaches and 7 seats in 2nd and 11th coach from Churchgate end are earmarked for Senior citizens while 10 seats in 4th and 7th coach from Churchgate end are earmarked for Divyangs.

Primarily, the ticket price for a single journey on the AC train was 1.2 times that of the same journey in First Class as an introductory offer, but w.e.f. 1st June, 2019 it was decided as 1.3 times of the base fare of existing single journey of Ist class ticket.

Unlike regular local trains, the AC EMU service has the facility of special weekly and fortnightly season ticket. From the time of its inception on 25th December 2017 to 25th December, 2019, so far 95.81 lakh passengers have travelled by the AC local, generating revenue of Rs.40.03 crore. On an average approximately 18000 passengers travel daily by AC local, with about 1500 passengers travelling in each service.
