NTPC Greenlights Rs 20,457 Crore Lara Super Thermal Power Expansion

NEW DELHI. NTPC Limited has approved an investment of ?20,456.70 crore for the Lara Super Thermal Power Project Stage III (2×800 MW). The decision was taken during the company’s Board meeting held on Saturday, July 11, 2026.

The new project will add 1,600 MW of power generation capacity through two 800 MW units. This expansion is expected to help meet India’s growing electricity demand and strengthen the country’s power supply.News

According to NTPC’s stock exchange filing, the project has been approved at an estimated cost of ?20,456.70 crore. The company shared the information with both the BSE and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) under Regulation 30 of the SEBI (Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements) Regulations, 2015.

RANCHI. State-owned power major NTPC Limited has announced that the 800 MW Unit-2 of the Patratu Super Thermal Power Project Phase-1 in Jharkhand will officially commence commercial operations from midnight on June 25, 2026. Developed by Patratu Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited, a subsidiary of NTPC, this critical addition marks the completion of the second of three planned 800 MW supercritical units at the facility, substantially bolstering regional grid stability and power availability. With this successful commissioning, the total installed capacity of the NTPC Group has scaled a new peak of 90,857 MW, while its overall commercial generation capacity climbs to 89,777 MW, further cementing the energy giant’s pivotal role in meeting the nation’s rising electricity demand.

PVUNL Synchronizes Second 800 MW Unit in Jharkhand

RAMGARH: Patratu Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (PVUNL), a joint venture between NTPC and the Jharkhand government, has successfully synchronized the second 800 MW unit of its Super Critical Thermal Power Project with the grid.

CEO Shri Ashok Sehgal announced that the team is now focused on achieving full load and completing trial operations to reach early Commercial Operation Date (COD). This milestone follows the commissioning of Unit-1 in November 2025. Developed in collaboration with BHEL, the unit will play a crucial role in meeting the rising energy demands of both Jharkhand and the nation.

Shri Sehgal credited the achievement to the relentless “never-give-up” spirit of the workforce and expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Power and the Jharkhand government for their continued support toward the “Viksit Bharat 2047” vision.
