The death toll in Bhiwandi building collapse site rose to twenty by Tuesday morning, twenty-eight hours after the incident. Rescue operations by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Thane, Bhiwandi disaster cell continue.

According to HINDUSTAN TIMES Eight among the dead are children ageing between two and fourteen years. As per the officials of Bhiwandi Nizampur City Municipal Corporation (BNCMC), around twenty to twenty-five people are still trapped inside the debris.

“As per the required details from locals at least 20-25 people are still trapped inside the debris. We also learnt that some workers were asleep on the ground floor which runs a power loom,” said Milind Palsule, public relations officer, BNCMC.

The 36-year-old ground plus three-storey Jilani building, located at Patel compound in Dhamankar naka, Bhiwandi in Maharashtra Thane district, collapsed on Monday morning at 3.30 am. Around 62 residents were fear trapped in the rubbles at the time of the accident. The third floor of the building came crashing down on to the first floor.

The injured are being rushed to the Indira Gandhi Memorial (IGM) hospital in Bhiwandi.

Ashish Kumar, NDRF deputy commandant who is leading the rescue operation, which involves over 100 rescue personnel, claimed that more and more dead bodies are being pulled out from under the debris now.
The rescue operations took a halt for 30 minutes on Tuesday morning as the team had to manage and balance the slab of the third floor that came crashing down.

“Those who are removed from the debris are mostly dead now as their chances of surviving inside the debris is less. We are working in shifts and trying to pull out them,” said Kumar.

Mumbai and Thane are likely to receive heavy rain on Tuesday with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a red alert with a forecast of heavy to very heavy rainfall (between 64 mm to 204.4 mm in 24 hours) at isolated places.

The intensity of the rain is likely to reduce from Wednesday, with the weather bureau issuing a yellow alert for Mumbai.

Moderate to a few intense spells, accompanied by thunderstorm and lightning, hit parts of Mumbai and neighbouring areas on Monday evening. Between 5 pm and 7 pm, Bandra recorded 20.2 mm, Santacruz 16.6 mm, Ram Mandir 28.5 mm and Thane and Kalyan between 40 mm to 70 mm of rainfall.

For the coastal districts – Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg – IMD has predicted extremely heavy rainfall (above 204 mm) on Tuesday.

“Given the low pressure area formed in north-west Bay of Bengal, parts of Konkan-Goa and adjoining ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra are very likely to receive enhanced rainfall activity during the next two days with a gradual reduction thereafter,” said IMD.

With the formation of the low pressure area, south-westerly monsoon flow is expected to strengthen, leading to an increase in rainfall activity in the state.

According to the forecast for Mumbai, occasional gusty winds with speed reaching 45 kmph to 55 kmph, along and off the coast, may damage vulnerable and temporary structures. With heavy to very heavy rainfall warning, flooding and traffic disruptions are also likely on Tuesday.

After above-average rainfall in August, Palghar, Mumbai and Raigad recorded deficient rainfall in September. Mumbai received 123.6 mm of rain between September 1 and 21, which is 46 per cent below the average (229.7 mm) for the same period. It had received 3261.3 mm rain since June 1, which is 55 per cent above the average mark.

All schools and junior colleges in Mumbai and neighbouring areas are closed today after the weather office forecast “extremely heavy rainfall” over the next 48 hours, the government said.
The weather office has issued a red alert–indicating “extremely heavy rainfall”–for Mumbai and neighbouring Raigad, weather officials said.

“In view of heavy rainfall forecasts, a holiday is declared for all schools & junior colleges in Mumbai, Thane and Konkan region today. District collectors in other parts of Maharashtra to decide, based on local conditions,” Maharashtra Minister of School Education Ashish Shelar tweeted.

Mumbai’s suburbs received heavy rain on Wednesday night. Versova recorded 50 mm rain within three hours, KS Hosalikar, Deputy Director General of Meteorology, IMD, Mumbai said.

Apart from Mumbai, Palghar and Thane are also expected to receive heavy to very heavy rain.

Mumbai has received heavy rain this monsoon, leading to delayed flights, traffic jams and flooding of homes.

The city’s streets regularly flood during the monsoon, which runs from June until September or October, and which provides India with most of its annual rainfall.

Almost every monsoon, Mumbai struggles to cope with the chaos caused by the rain. The suburban trains – the city’s lifeline – are affected and low-lying areas get flooded.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted heavy rainfall and has issued a red rain alert for Mumbai and Raigad districts. This indicates a precipitation of more than 204 mm in 24 hours starting Thursday morning.

However, Mumbai would receive heavy rainfall on Friday, but Raigad will continue to receive extremely heavy showers that day also, the official said.

Education minister Ashish Shelar has announced that all schools and junior colleges in Thane, Konkan and Mumbai region will remain shut as the weather department forecast a red alert in these regions. He also asked district collectors to keep an eye on the developments.

People in Mumbai woke up to a rainy morning today with water-logging being reported in some parts of the city. Areas like Sion, Parel, Dadar and Byculla received heavy rain in the wee hours.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has already issued an ‘orange alert’ for Mumbai and Thane for today. IMD has predicted that the two cities will receive heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places. However, the rain is likely to subside by Thursday to just ‘heavy rainfall’, and by Friday and Saturday, it will further reduce to light rains, IMD said.

Hours of incessant rainfall in Mumbai and adjoining districts led to water-logging in several parts of the city on Wednesday morning. Water-logging occurred in the areas near King Circle railway station and Gandhi Market. IMD has predicted that the maximum and minimum temperatures are most likely to remain around 29 degrees Celsius and 24 degrees Celsius respectively.

In weather terminology, a forecast of ‘heavy rain’ indicates rainfall ranging from 64.5mm to 115.5 mm while ‘very heavy rainfall’ indicates rainfall between 115.6mm and 204.4 mm. Similar alerts have also been issued for other parts of Maharashtra. The IMD has issued an ‘orange alert’ for Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudhurg. An orange alert is issued when IMD forecasts weather conditions that would disrupt daily life.
