Buildings with “heritage status” among the 100-year-old mill buildings of India United Mills owned by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation will be preserved in their original form. In this, the history of the textile industry and the progress made by the city of Mumbai in that regard will be presented to the next generation as a “Textile Museum” through the “Archaeological Department of BMC. BMC has informed RTI Activist Anil Galgali that the first phase of the three phases will be completed by December 2020, though the work completed in a phased manner is currently halted due to covid outbreak. The history of Mumbai and textile mills will be displayed on the water screen and Sir JJ School of Architecture is playing a major role in this initiative.

RTI activist Anil Galgali had sought various information about the textile museum under construction from BMC. Senior archaeological protection engineer Sanjay Jadhav informed Galgali that the first phase of work is underway on war footing and at present a six month extension has been given till December 2020 due to the Covid-19.

Work on phase 1A has started from January 15, 2019 and will beautify the pond and surrounding area and create a mural on the multi-purpose plaza and textile industry. It will cost Rs 6.03 crore and Rs 1.27 crore has been paid to contractor M/s Sawani Construction Company so far. Construction of multi-purpose plaza is in progress.

Phase 1B involves the production, screening and circulation of a short film to show the history of Mumbai and textile mills will be constructed on the waterfront by creating a musical fountain through a variety of tube mouth. For these 4 years, a total of 28 different short films have been produced and performed on the water screen. The work started on November 13, 2019 at a total cost of Rs 23.57 crore. This work is being done by M/s Dev SV Premium World Consortium. Today, the work of creating and supplying the necessary equipment for the music fountains is complete.

Sir JJ School of Architecture is working as architect for both the works. The fee for the first work is Rs 30.15 lakh, out of which Rs 15.67 lakh has been paid. The second work fee is Rs 1.18 crore, out of which Rs 47.15 lakh has been paid.

The tendering process for Phase 2 is awaiting administrative sanction and consultant Sir JJ School of Architecture has prepared an estimated tender of Rs 268 crore. The total advisory fee is Rs 13.40 crore and Rs 2.01 crore has been paid so far. In the third phase, the actual work of the museum will commence.

The India United Mill was built in the year 1890 and has a special significance. BMC has started construction of a textile museum on 44,000 sq m of land allotted, which will be a beautiful place in the future. Anil Galgali has opined that anyone can enjoy a short film with the history of Mumbai and textile mills.
