City Mayor Christian Estrosi stated on Twitter that the knife attack had happened in or near the city’s Notre Dame church and that the French authorities had detained the attacker. A police source informed Reuters that a woman was decapitated.

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has strongly condemned the recent terrorist attacks in France, including today’s heinous attack in Nice inside a church.

In a tweet, the Prime Minister said, “I strongly condemn the recent terrorist attacks in France, including today’s heinous attack in Nice inside a church. Our deepest and heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and the people of France. India stands with France in the fight against terrorism.”

Meanwhile in another incident of stabbing in Saudi Arabia,  a Saudi man was arrested in Jeddah after attacking a guard with a “sharp tool” at the French consulate on Thursday, Reuters quoted Saudi state TV as saying.

The two attacks come while France is still reeling from the beheading earlier this month of French middle school teacher Samuel Paty in Paris by a man of Chechen origin.

A top UN official has strongly condemned the “barbaric attack” in a French church on Thursday, stressing that such heinous acts targeting civilians, including worshippers, are intolerable and “utterly unjustifiable”.

High Representative for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) Miguel Moratinos “strongly condemns the barbaric attack” that killed three people — two women and a man — at the Notre-Dame Basilica in the city of Nice on the southeast coast of France.

Moratinos “stresses that such heinous attacks targeting civilians, including worshippers, are intolerable and utterly unjustifiable whenever, wherever and by whomsoever committed,” a statement issued by the spokesperson for the High Representative said.

“In 80s, we were training these Mujahideen people to do jihad against Soviet when they occupied Afghanistan. So, these people were trained by Pakistan, funded by United States’ CIA and now a decade later when the Americans come into Afghanistan,” Khan said in an interview to Russia Today.

Khan further added that Pakistan should have remained neutral at the time because now the terror groups have turned against them. The same groups who are all in Pakistan are supposed to say that now because Americans are there it is no longer jihad, it is terrorism. It was a big contradiction and I strongly felt that Pakistan should have been neutral because by joining in, these groups turned against us,” he said.Pakistan lost over 70,000 people and $100 billion after joining United States’ War on Terror in Afghanistan, Khan said. Despite all the losses, Washington still blames on Pakistan for its own setbacks in Afghanistan, he added.

“We lost 70,000 people, we lost over a 100 billion dollars to the economy. In the end, we were blamed for the Americans not succeeding in Afghanistan. I felt it was very unfair on Pakistan,” Khan said in an interview to RT.

“The same groups who are all in Pakistan are supposed to say that now because Americans are there it is no longer jihad, it is terrorism. It was a big contradiction and I strongly felt that Pakistan should have been neutral because by joining in, these groups turned against us,” he said.

Khan’s comments come after US President Donald Trump called off peace talks with the Taliban and canceled a “secret meeting” with the group`s representatives even. US and Taliban representatives were working towards a peace deal and held nine rounds of talks.

Khan’s statement came hours after Trump offered to be the “mediator” between India and Pakistan on the Kashmir issue as the two leaders met at the White House where they discussed a host of issues, including the Afghan peace process.

The Indian government has denied Trump’s astonishing claim that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had asked him to mediate.

Khan, who is on a three-day official visit to the US, welcomed Trump’s offer of mediation.

“Bilaterally there will never be (a resolution of the Kashmir dispute),” Khan told Fox News, the favourite channel of president Trump.

“There was one point when there was General (Pervez) Musharraf and Prime Minister (Atal Bihari) Vajpayee of India when we did get close to the resolution of the Kashmiri issue. But since then we are poles apart and I really feel that India should come on the table; US could play a big part. President Trump certainly can play a big part,” Khan said hours after he met Trump at his Oval Office for the first time at the White House.

“We are talking about 1.3 billion people on this earth. Imagine the dividends of peace if somehow that issue could be resolved,” Khan said when the Fox news anchor read out the Indian statement that it has been India’s consistent position that all outstanding issues with Pakistan are discussed only bilaterally.

“Any engagement with Pakistan would require an end to cross border terrorism. The Simla Agreement and the Lahore Declaration provide the basis to resolve all issues between India and Pakistan bilaterally,” India said , refuting that Prime Minister Modi ever asked for US mediation on Kashmir.

Khan welcomed Trump’s remarks, saying “President, I can tell you that, right now, you would have the prayers of over a billion people if you can mediate and resolve this issue”.
