BHUBANESWAR: Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) CMD, Dr. Ashok Kumar Panda visited the Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) on a two-day tour, during which he reviewed ongoing expansion activities and stressed on the importance of safety, equipment reliability and enhanced production of value-added steel. Dr. Panda arrived in Rourkela on Friday and was received at the airport by RSP Director-in-Charge Alok Verma. Senior officials, including Executive Director (Human Resources) Tarun Misra and Executive Director (Materials Management) Anil Kumar, were also present. The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) unit of RSP accorded him a ceremonial guard of honour on arrival.

On Saturday, the SAIL chief inspected key expansion sites at the integrated steel plant, including the New Plate Mill, one of the facility’s major production units. He was accompanied by Verma, Executive Director (Works) Biswaranjan Palai and Executive Director (Projects) S. Pal Chowdhury. Following the site visit, Dr. Panda chaired a high-level review meeting at the Manthan Conference Hall, attended by RSP’s senior management, including executive directors, chief general managers, heads of departments and other officials.

Dr. Panda commended the plant’s performance and its achievements in setting production and operational benchmarks across several areas. He said the SAIL management had reposed significant confidence in RSP and expected the plant to play a pivotal role in the company’s future growth strategy. During the review, the CMD highlighted three strategic priorities for the steel major: strengthening workplace safety, maintaining equipment health to ensure operational efficiency, and increasing the production of value-added steel products to enhance competitiveness and profitability.

Director-in-Charge Alok Verma thanked the CMD for his guidance and reaffirmed the commitment of the RSP workforce to meeting the expectations of the SAIL management and contributing to the company’s long-term growth objectives.

Steel Melting Shop-II (SMS-II) of SAIL Rourkela Steel Plant achieved a major operational milestone on 12th May 2026 when Converter ‘B’ established a new record in converter lining life of 7,890 heats by surpassing the previous best of 7,685 heats achieved in May 2025. The converter, relined and maintained by M/s RHI Magnesita India Ltd., remained in continuous operation for 358 days from 19th May 2025.

The remarkable enhancement in converter lining life was made possible through stringent process control, scientific refractory management practices, and consistent adherence to standard operating procedures during converter operations. The achievement highlights the operational excellence, technical competence, and dedicated teamwork of the entire SMS-II collective, including the operating crew, blowers, lance operators, and shift personnel.

Several key operational initiatives contributed significantly to this achievement, including optimized blowing practices, effective utilization of laser scanner technology, improved slag regime management, accurate end-point control, and timely gunning and patching of the refractory lining. Continuous monitoring of thermal load, bath agitation, and slag chemistry by the Area In-charge and Shift In-charges, along with disciplined control over hot metal and scrap quality, played a crucial role in minimizing localized wear and extending the converter campaign life.

The achievement also reflects the close coordination and collective efforts of the Refractory eng.dept and Operations,, Mechanical Maintenance, Electrical Maintenance of SMS-II and RCL teams, which ensured stable and consistent converter performance throughout the campaign period. The accomplishment was achieved under the overall guidance of Mr. S. S. Panda, CGM (Flux and Refractories) and Mr. M. G. Srikanth, CGM (SMS-II).

The converter lining life achieved significantly exceeded the guaranteed lining life of 6,000 heats, resulted in an estimated direct savings of approximately ₹1.5 crores. The extended campaign life of Converter ‘B’ has also contributed towards enhanced converter availability, higher productivity, and overall cost optimization of SMS-II.

NEW DELHI. India’s power sector today is navigating a transformative phase — balancing rising energy demand, sustainability commitments, grid reliability, infrastructure expansion, and rapid technological evolution. In this journey, every new milestone strengthens not only the grid, but also the nation’s growth story.

SAIL Chairman and Managing Director Ashok Kumar Panda said SAIL will continue hiring at lower levels for expansion and operational requirements. SAIL has also launched a voluntary retirement scheme aimed at reducing employee numbers by another 500 to 1,000, Panda said

The steelmaker plans capital expenditure of about Rs 15,000 crore in FY27, up from around Rs 9,100 crore in FY26, as it expands plants at IISCO, Bokaro and Bhilai.

Panda said annual capital expenditure could rise further to Rs 20,000 crore-Rs 25,000 crore over the following years as expansion projects gather pace. The company said it will continue focusing on operational efficiency, cost reduction and higher capacity utilisation while managing future borrowing requirements.

NEW DELHI. Ministry of Steel today signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) for 85 projects with investments of more than 11 thousand crore rupees in New Delhi. The Ministry said that MoUs have been signed with 55 companies under the third round of Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme 1.2.

Addressing the gathering after the MoU signing ceremony, Minister for Steel and Heavy Industries H.D. Kumaraswamy underscored that PLI 1.2 is a decisive step towards building a resilient and globally competitive speciality steel ecosystem. He noted that the scheme advances the twin national priorities of Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat by encouraging domestic capacity creation in advanced and strategic steel products. The Minister highlighted that PLI 1.2 seeks to address the structural gap by incentivising domestic production, conserving foreign exchange, and positioning India as a reliable global supplier of advanced steel.
