The India Research Tour 2025 is a national initiative led by Springer Nature in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and ICSSR and is set to cover 29 institutions across 15 cities in 7 states between6 October and 13 November 2025.It will engage with researchers, policymakers, and academia enroute focusing on advancing Open Access and Open Science, strengthening research integrity, encouraging e-book adoption, supporting editorial board member recruitment, and promoting diversity and inclusion in research.

The team met with academicians, researchers and students at the Bennett University, Sharda University, and Jaypee Institute of Information Technology. Following these engagements in Greater Noida, the tour will travel onwards to Uttar Pradesh’s capital, Lucknow.

New Delhi, 6 October 2025 – The India Research Tour 2025, one of the country’s most ambitious and influential research outreach initiatives, was formally flagged off today at the Indian Council for Social Science Research (ICSSR) in New Delhi. Now in its third year, the tour is organised by Springer Nature in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Government of India. This year’s tour will focus on a wide range of important topics including awareness and advancement of Open Access and Open Science, strengthening research integrity, encouraging e-book adoption, supporting editorial board member recruitment, and promoting diversity and inclusion in research.

This initiative has engaged thousands of researchers, academicians, and thought leaders over the past two years and has now become a powerful platform to nurture a culture of integrity, inclusivity, and innovation within India’s research environment. The publisher has covered 36 institutions across 25 cities and 15 states thus far in the past two years and has recognised over 200 women researchers at these institutes for their contributions to multidisciplinary research.

स्प्रिंगर नेचर द्वारा शिक्षा मंत्रालय, भारत सरकार के सहयोग से आयोजित इंडिया रिसर्च टूर 2025 का औपचारिक उद्घाटन 6 अक्टूबर 2025 को नई दिल्ली स्थित भारतीय सामाजिक विज्ञान अनुसंधान परिषद (ICSSR) में किया गया। तब से यह यात्रा उत्तर प्रदेश, बिहार और झारखंड होते हुए कई प्रमुख शैक्षणिक संस्थानों तक पहुँची है। इस पहल का उद्देश्य शोध सहयोग को प्रोत्साहित करना, ज्ञान के आदान-प्रदान को सशक्त बनाना और शोध में उत्कृष्टता को बढ़ावा देना है। आईआईटी खड़गपुर में आयोजित सत्र के पश्चात अब यह टूर कोलकाता पहुँचेगा, जिसके बाद इसका अगला पड़ाव पूर्वोत्तर भारत के असम और अरुणाचल प्रदेश राज्यों में होगा।

भारत सरकार द्वारा वर्ष 2019 में “इंस्टीट्यूट ऑफ एमिनेंस” का दर्जा प्राप्त करने वाला आईआईटी खड़गपुर न केवल भारत का पहला आईआईटी है, बल्कि यह तकनीकी शिक्षा और अनुसंधान के क्षेत्र में एक वैश्विक रूप से प्रतिष्ठित संस्थान भी है। इस संस्थान ने भारत के शोध पारिस्थितिकी तंत्र (research ecosystem) को आगे बढ़ाने में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाई है।

स्प्रिंगर नेचर और भारत सरकार के शिक्षा मंत्रालय के सहयोग से आयोजित इंडिया रिसर्च टूर 2025 का औपचारिक उद्घाटन 6 अक्टूबर को नई दिल्ली में इंडियन काउंसिल फॉर सोशल साइंस रिसर्च (ICSSR) में किया गया। इसके बाद से यह यात्रा उत्तर प्रदेश और बिहार के प्रमुख संस्थानों जैसे IIT कानपुर, IIM बोधगया और IIT पटना में शोधकर्ताओं के साथ संवाद और सहभागिता करती हुई आगे बढ़ी है।

यह दौरा अब झारखंड में आगे बढ़ेगा और राष्ट्रीय प्रौद्योगिकी संस्थान (NIT), जमशेदपुर और भारतीय प्रौद्योगिकी संस्थान (IIT – भारतीय खान विद्यालय), धनबाद के शोधकर्ताओं से मुलाकात करेगा। NIT जमशेदपुर तकनीकी नवाचार और उद्योग से जुड़े शोध का एक प्रमुख केंद्र बन चुका है, जबकि IIT (ISM) धनबाद खनन, पृथ्वी विज्ञान और सतत संसाधन प्रबंधन के क्षेत्र में झारखंड को वैश्विक पहचान दिला रहा है। ये संस्थान मिलकर दिखाते हैं कि झारखंड कैसे औद्योगिक विकास, पर्यावरण संरक्षण और राज्य की विकास प्राथमिकताओं के लिए महत्वपूर्ण क्षेत्रों में शोध क्षमता विकसित कर रहा है।

The tool will be used by Springer Nature’s Research Integrity Group (RIG) to assess submissions to almost all journals and books published by Springer Nature, analysing the relevance of each reference used. If a number of references are identified as irrelevant, the submission will be flagged to RIG who will manually check the manuscript and decide whether the submission should be withdrawn.

The irrelevant reference checker tool has undergone multiple rounds of testing and validation to ensure it provides a precise and reliable assessment of references across academic disciplines, and training and development of the tool will be ongoing.  Human oversight will always remain in place, in line with Springer Nature’s AI Principles.

Chris Graf, Director of Research Integrity at Springer Nature, commented: “As the use of AI to generate fake research papers becomes more effective, reference checking provides a key opportunity to identify these unethical efforts.  The addition of this tool to our existing checks will help us to catch many unethical submissions that would otherwise progress to take up editors’ and peer reviewers’ time.”

The launch of the irrelevant reference checker tool comes just ten months after the launch of two other AI tools to detect problematic submissions that Springer Nature has developed in-house.  The first, Geppetto, supports the identification of papers that contain AI-generated fake content, the second, SnappShot, those that contain problematic images.

Graf added: “Fake research is a challenge that affects the entire publishing industry and is something that Springer Nature will not tolerate.  From creating AI tools, to building a now 50-strong expert research integrity unit, to developing our employees’ and editors’ expertise through training, we are absolutely committed to ensuring the robustness of published research for researchers to build upon.”

The results of the first national survey to investigate research integrity in India, a collaboration between National Academy of Sciences, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) – National Physical Laboratory and publisher Springer Nature, indicate broad support for mandatory in-person research integrity training across researcher demographics. The survey found that whilst 53% of respondents stated that their institution offered research integrity related training, 87% felt that research integrity training provided by their institution is effective, and 62% support mandatory training on research integrity for postgraduate students and early career researchers.

Key findings from the survey include:

• When asked to describe Research Integrity, including practices related to it, 85% of the responses focused on positive research traits, the most popular being honesty, ethical, trustworthy, and This is consistent with the survey findings from the UK and the USA.
• 53% of respondents stated that their institution offered research integrity related training, though only 2 out of 3 researchers indicated that their integrity training was mandatory. Further, 70% of post graduate students stated that they have mandatory research integrity training, while only 30% undergraduate students take integrity
• Current training in India has greater focus on foundational elements such as importance of research integrity, authorship guidance, defining research integrity and ethics This contrasts with data related trainings being sought by researchers in the UK, USA and Australia, which aren’t higher up in priority for Indian researchers.
• 80% of respondents feel they are able to provide feedback on training materials, but 9% feel that feedback is not reviewed and 75% of STM researchers feel that training providers in India aren’t given feedback on the quality of research developed.
• For those who had access to training, 64% of Indian respondents reported that the training was mandatory. Most respondents from India agreed that training at some stage in a researcher’s career should be

Respondents from India also indicated that they would like more training on the importance of researcher integrity, authorship, issues around statistics, reproducibility, and ethics approval. Whilst these are important as indicated in the survey findings from the US, UK and Australia, the emphasis in these geographies has been on trainings in management and sharing of research data.

The Indian survey was conducted between July and October 2023 as part of Springer Nature’s commitment to support good practices internationally by providing insights into research integrity training and needs. Questions were addressed to both institutional management and researchers/faculty members to deliver a baseline review of perceived levels of training in research integrity and good research practices at research institutions, including training in statistics, data management, data sharing and mentorship. 600+ responses, including from most top institutes and universities in India, were received and analysed.
