It was a sea of saffron as Yogi Adityanath waved victory signs at hundreds of BJP workers gathered at the party office, many waving the party’s flag. Before the counting of votes, the BJP had promised “early holi” celebrations.

“Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, today the BJP won a majority in Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur. The voters have blessed Modi-ji‘s policies of development and good governance,” the Chief Minister told the ecstatic crowd.

Today’s win catapults the saffron-wearing Yogi Adityanath even higher, to the BJP’s top rung.

The win defied predictions of anti-incumbency hitting the BJP in UP amid a devastating wave of Covid and the farmer protests.

Many see Yogi Adityanath, 49, who is known to make divisive speeches, as a Prime Minister candidate one day.

In a recent interview to Reuters, however, the priest-politician said: “I am just a monk… I will serve the people of the state till the party wants or else I will serve people through my … temple.”

BJP has scripted history in Uttar Pradesh as it retained power for the second term in India’s most populous state. While Yogi Adityanath was the CM face of the party, but the campaign was largely led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself. The BJP scored victory in Uttar Pradesh despite Akhilesh Yadav’s challenge, farm protests and caste dynamics.

In the 403-member Uttar Pradesh assembly, the BJP has won 255 seats, 53 more than the halfway mark of 202. Its allies Apna Dal(S) and Nishad Party clinched 12 and 6 seats respectively.

The Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party (SP) won 111 constituencies and its allies Rashtriya Lok Dal of Jayant Chaudhary 8 and Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party of Om Prakash Rajbhar grabbed 6.

While Congress managed to win two seats, Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) could only get one seat despite polling 12.88 per cent votes.

The BJP’s vote share rose to 41.29 per cent as against 39.67 per cent in the 2017 assembly elections. The vote share of the SP increased from 21.82 per cent in 2017 to 32.06 per cent.

It was a high-stakes election in UP for the Bharatiya Janata Party as the state sends the highest number of 80 MPs to Lok Sabha and the party’s performance will have a bearing on the 2024 general election.

the Election Commission on Sunday issued a notice to a BJP candidate in Uttar Pradesh for allegedly making an inflammatory statement, and said he prima facie violated the model code and the electoral law. The poll watchdog gave Mayankeshwar Sharan Singh, the BJP candidate from the Tiloi assembly constituency in Amethi, 24 hours to respond.

Counting of votes in Punjab and Uttar Pradesh, along with Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur, will take place on March 10.

meanwhile Prime Minister Narendra Modi targeted rivals Samajwadi Party and the Congress in Uttar Pradesh today, adding to allegations that the parties are soft on terror. Pointing to the 2008 Ahmedabad serial blasts, which claimed 56 lives and left over 200 people injured, he said some parties are sympathetic to terrorists. Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party is the BJP’s biggest challenger it the state where the third phase of elections are being held today.

Speaking at a rally in Hardoi, he accused the erstwhile Uttar Pradesh government of seeking to withdraw cases against terrorists.

“The attitude of the leaders of the Samajwadi Party and the Congress has been even more alarming. These people address a terrorist like Osama as ‘ji’. These people shed tears over the elimination of terrorists in Batla House encounter,” he said.

“Similarly, in 14 cases of terrorist attacks in Uttar Pradesh, the Samajwadi government had given orders to withdraw the cases from many terrorists.  These people were setting off blast after blast, and the Samajwadi Party government was not even allowing these terrorists to be prosecuted,” he added.

The BJP has traditionally accused the Congress of appeasement politics because of its sizeable Muslim support base. Once this support shifted to the Samajwadi Party, the barbs got sharper.

बहुजन समाजवादी पार्टी प्रमुख मायावती इन दिनों चुप है. हाथरस से लेकर हर दलित अत्याचार की घटना पर बोलती नहीं और बोलती है भी तो सहम कर .वजह ये है कि उत्तरप्रदेश में राज्यसभा की 10 सीटों पर हो रहे चुनाव में अब 11 उम्मीदवार हो गये हैं जाहिर है चुनाव होंगे तो मायावती को हर हाल में बीजेपी की मदद लगेगी . असल में अंतिम समय में अखिलेश यादव ने 11 वां उम्मीदवार देकर मायावती की मुश्किलें बढा दी है.

यदि सपा की तरफ से प्रकाश बजाज 11 वें उम्मीदवार के तौर पर पर्चा नहीं भरते तो बीजेपी के 8. सपा का एक और बीएसपी को एक सीट मिल जाती लेकिन अखिलेश यादव ने बीजेपी और बीएसपी का गठजोड का खुलासा करने के लिए ये चाल चल ही दी . नौ नवंबर को होने वाले चुनाव में बीएसपी सबसे कमजोर है उसके पास केवल 18 विधायक है और जीत के लिए से बाहरी वोट चाहिये ही .एनडीए के पास अपने 8 उम्मीदवारों की जीत के बाद भी 17 वोट अतिरिक्त है जाहिर है अगर बीएसपी अपने उम्मीदवार रामजी गौतम को जिताना चाहती है तो से उसे एनडीए से मदद लेनी होगी .

असल में मायावती का आधार लगातार दरक रहा है और अब वो नये साथी की तलाश में है . पिछली बार सपा और बसपा ने मिलकर विधानसभा चुनाव लडा था लेकिन बीएसपी एकदम सिमट गयी .अब बीजेपी भी यूपी में अगले विधानसभा चुनाव की तैयारी कर रही है ऐसे में बीएसपी के साथ उसका पर्दे के पीछे से समझौता फायदा दिला सकता है.इतना ही नहीं असल में बीएसपी  प्रमुख अपने खिलाफ चल रहे मामलों की जांच से बचने के लिए भी केन्द्र से पंगा नहीं लेना चाहती .

मायावती चाहती तो सपा से मदद ले सकती थी सपा के पास 47 विधाय़क है और सपा ने केवल एक उम्मीदवार राम गोपाल वर्मा को बनाया है लेकिन मायावती ने कोई पहल नहीं की तो सपा ने एक और उम्मीदवार उतार दिया . असल में सपा को लगता है कि मायावती अब बीजेपी के इशारे पर ही चल रही है. कहा तो ये भी जा रहा है कि बीएसपी ने बीजेपी को फायदा पहुंचाने के लिए ही बिहार में अपना तीसरा गठबंधन बनाया है .ताकि सत्ता विरोधी वोट काट सके.

असल में मायावती ऐसे दोराहे पर खडी है जहां उनके सामने सवाल है कि राजनीती बचाये या खुद को . मायावती हमेशा से खुद को बचाने पर सबसे ज्यादा जोर देती रही है इसलिए उनका वोट बैंक लगातार खिसक रहा है .
