]]> Bilaspur: South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), which contributes nearly 20 per cent of India’s total coal production, has announced plans to develop 700 MW of solar power capacity by 2028–29 as part of its clean energy transition strategy. Addressing a gathering, SECL Chairman-cum-Managing Director Harish Duhan said coal continues to play a crucial role in ensuring national energy security, with more than 70 per cent of the country’s electricity generation still dependent on coal-based power. He noted that while meeting rising energy demand, the company is also aligning with India’s broader renewable energy goals by diversifying into solar power and adopting sustainable mining practices.

Alongside its energy initiatives, SECL is expanding its social responsibility programmes in coalfield regions of Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. Through flagship schemes such as SECL Ki Dhadkan and SECL Ke Sushrut, the company is supporting life-saving treatment for children with congenital heart defects, assisting medical aspirants with coaching and scholarships, and promoting skill development among local youth. The company said these initiatives aim to improve healthcare, education and livelihood opportunities in mining-affected areas, reflecting a balanced approach between industrial growth, environmental responsibility and community welfare.
