Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a severe and progressive genetic disorder primarily affecting muscles. It is one of the most common and severe forms of muscular dystrophy, typically affecting young boys. It is caused by mutations in the dystrophin gene located on the X chromosome. As it is an X-linked recessive disorder, it primarily affects males, while females are typically carriers of the mutation. Along with trouble in movement, DMD also causes neurobehavioral problems, including inattention, possible learning delays, hyperactivity, and depression.  

According to a new study by researchers in Belgium and the Netherlands, the neurobehavioral problems in boys and young men with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) can be eased with medications, including the stimulant methylphenidate which is commonly used in treatment of ADHD.

The team of researchers found that although those experiencing inattentiveness, hyperactive features, learning problems, and emotional and behavioral dysregulation respond positively to treatment with methylphenidate, they also witnessed some adverse side effects that must be considered. Moreover, per the guidelines, it is unclear how to use psychopharmaceuticals or who may benefit from them. In tests, some patients experienced side effects such as weight loss, anger, compulsive behavior with self-harm tendencies, and hearing voices.
