Mr. R.N. Rajendran, Former CGM In-Charge (Mechanical & Shops) handed over the reconditioned Sinter Screen to the user department in the presence of Mr. Shekhar Narayan, CGM (Sinter), Mr. S.K. Padhi, GM In-Charge (SP-II), Mr. S.K. Das, GM In-Charge (Design, Shop – Mechanical & Foundry), senior officers from SP-II, Shops, Design, and the Mechanical Shop collective.

The Cold Sinter Screen had been earlier removed from the operational circuit due to defects in the exciter gear box seat and mismatches in other equipment areas, making it unfit for service. Given the vital importance of the equipment for sinter production, the issue was taken up with the Mechanical Shop team. A detailed joint study was conducted by the Mechanical Shop and SP-II teams, which revealed that the defect could be addressed within the capabilities of the Mechanical Shop.

The team thoroughly studied the design and mounting layout of the exciter gear box. All the earlier mounting holes were plugged, and repositioning of the gear box was planned with accurate marking by the skilled marking team. Using the CNC Skoda Horizontal Boring Machine, angular drilling and machining of the gear box pad was carried out to achieve the required angle of inclination and correct positioning.

It is worth mentioning that procurement of a new Sinter Screen would have cost the plant approximately Rs. 20 lakh. This accomplishment once again highlights the technical expertise and problem-solving capabilities of the Mechanical Shop collective, who have contributed significantly to cost saving and plant operations continuity through this timely intervention.

At SP-II, sinter is dispatched to Blast Furnace- 1 and 5 through a series of conveyors. One of the persistent operational challenges had been excessive dust generation at the transfer point between two belts of BF-5. Demonstrating technical ingenuity and teamwork, the departments concerned designed, fabricated, and installed a customized defogging system to combat the issue effectively.

The newly commissioned system employs six strategically positioned nozzles that generate a fine mist by mixing water and compressed air via solenoid-controlled valves. This mist effectively captures airborne dust particles at the source, thereby reducing particulate dispersion in the working environment.

Further enhancing the system’s efficiency, a logic-based automated control mechanism was integrated. This innovative solution has already demonstrated excellent results in dust suppression and stands as a benchmark for similar in-house solutions at other transfer points within the plant.

The successful execution of this project was made possible by a dedicated cross-functional team from the Operations, Mechanical, and Electrical departments, comprising Mr. Verinder Singh, GM (Mechanical), Mr. Shantanu Mohanta, DGM (Operations), Mr. Balram Raut, AGM (Electrical), Mr. Manoj Majhi, Deputy Manager (Mechanical), Mr. P.K. Nath, Deputy Manager (Electrical), Mr. H. Tudu, Assistant Manager (Electrical) and Mr. Debdutta Sahoo, Junior Manager (Mechanical). The initiative was undertaken under the visionary leadership and guidance of Mr. Shekhar Narayan, CGM (Sinter), and Mr. Santosh Kumar Padhi, HoD, Sinter Plant-II.

This achievement not only highlights the technical competence and proactive approach of the SP-II collective but also reaffirms RSP’s commitment to sustainability, workplace safety, and continuous improvement through indigenous innovations.
