The desalination process at Simhadri is notably eco-friendly, as it leverages waste heat from the power plant’s flue gas to power a multi-effect distillation system. This integration creates a unique, low-carbon manufacturing cycle. Currently, the facility produces approximately 100,000 litres of potable water daily. This output is bottled under the Rail Neer brand, meeting the drinking water requirements of the Waltair division of the East Coast Railway under an arrangement with IRCTC.

Building on the success of the Visakhapatnam plant, NTPC has expanded this innovative footprint to Vallur, located near Chennai. The Vallur facility uses solar thermal energy for distillation, providing potable water for in-house consumption and supporting the needs of nearby communities. These projects underscore NTPC’s commitment to utilising R&D for environmental stewardship and resource circularity.
