Contract labour awarded under Instant Recognition Award scheme at Silicon Steel Mill of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant

An award function was organized at Silicon Steel Mill (SSM) of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) on 11^th August, 2025 to felicitate contract labour engaged in the department for their exemplary efforts. Mr. Subrat Kumar, CGM (HSMs & Auxiliaries) presided over the function and presented the awards to 14 contract workers of different agencies for their noteworthy jobs which have helped production, despatch and in liquidating various unsafe points in the shop floor. Mr. C R Misra, GM In-Charge & HoD, SSM, Mr. D Banerjee, GM, SSM (Mechanical), Mr. M P Rajarao, GM, SSM (Electrical) and Mr. B Das, GM, SSM (Operation), Senior Officers of SSM and HR as well as the representatives of the agencies concerned were present on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Subrat Kumar appreciated the dedication and hard work of the contract labour, emphasising that their contributions are integral to the smooth functioning, safety, and productivity of the mill. He encouraged them to maintain their commitment and continue supporting the plant’s growth and operational excellence.

At the outset Mr. C R Misra in his welcome address highlighted the valuable contributions made by the contract labour and spoke about the culture of recognition practiced in RSP.

Safety Circle Team Implements Innovative Safety Measures at Silicon Steel Mill of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant

In a major stride towards ensuring workplace safety, the Safety Circle Team ‘Suraksha Prahari’ of Silicon Steel Mill (SSM), SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has implemented an innovative solution by installing an Online Ammonia Detection System at strategic locations in the Ammonia Cracking Unit (ACU). The initiative has significantly bolstered safety standards and reduced the risk of casualties in the event of an ammonia leak.

The team realized the need for a more robust and proactive safety system. Going beyond mere compliance, the team took a holistic approach to improve overall safety by ensuring early detection, swift alerts, and preventive maintenance.

A comprehensive system analysis was carried out by the ‘Suraksha Prahari’ team, leading to several key upgrades. These included condition-based replacement of unloading hoses, improved access to isolation valves for emergency handling, and replacement of flange packing. The highlight of the initiative was the installation of four sensor-based online ammonia detectors near the ammonia storage tank and cracking furnaces. These detectors provide real-time alerts in the control room through an HMI with three-tier alarm levels including a visual lamp flashes when ammonia concentration exceeds 25 PPM, a buzzer sounds at 25 PPM and a continuous loud alarm is triggered at 50 PPM and above.

The system is also backed by CCTV surveillance with live monitoring in the control room, ensuring rapid response to any untoward situation. Enhanced housekeeping practices were also introduced to maintain a clean and hazard-free environment.

The team behind this safety enhancement comprises Mr. Kedar Nath Hui, Junior Engineer & Team Leader; Mr. Prasanna Kumar Swain, Junior Engineer & Deputy Leader; Mr. Syed Abdul Rajik, Junior Engineer; and Ms. Payel Sarkar, Junior Engineering Associate. The group was guided by Mrs. D. Shakuntala Reddy, AGM, SSM, who served as the facilitator.

The ‘Suraksha Prahari’ team also bagged the gold award at the 16th Chapter Convention on Quality Concepts (CCQC-2025), Bhilai Chapter, held at SAIL, Bhilai Steel Plant.

Mock Drill on Gas Safety organized at Silicon Steel Mill of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant

A Mock Drill simulating an ammonia leakage scenario was conducted at the Ammonia Storage Tank – I, ACU of Silicon Steel Mill of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) on 26^th June, 2025 evening with the objective of reinforcing disaster preparedness and emergency response mechanism at odd hours. The Mock Drill scenario revolved around at simulated leakage of ammonia, triggering alarm by Online Ammonia Detector and emergency siren at ACU.

Mr. C R Mishra, GM In Charge (SSM) and other senior officers were present on the occasion. The exercise involved the active participation of three teams i.e. the Combat team, Rescue team, and Auxiliary team. These teams consisted of members from Silicon Steel Mill, Safety Engineering Department, Fire Services, EMD, OHSC, CISF and the transport department.

The mock drill specifically assessed the response time of different agencies and their adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) related to ammonia leakage. Detailed analysis and evaluation were carried out in the presence of functional heads and representatives from associated units, highlighting areas of strength and improvement.

It is worth mentioning here that RSP regularly organizes such mock drills in strategic units to maintain a high level of preparedness and effectively address any exigencies that may arise.

Relocated Amiad Filter successfully fabricated and installed at Silicon Steel Mill of SAIL, RSP

In a major operational upgradation at the Synthesis Gas Plant of Silicon Steel Mill of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) a relocated Amiad Filter EBS-10000 from the closed Hot Strip Mill-1 (HSM-1) was successfully fabricated and installed. At a function Mr. Subrat Kumar, CGM (HSMs & Auxiliary) inaugurated the ugraded facility. Present on the occasion were Mr. Chittaranjan Misra, GM In-charge, SSM (HOD), Mr. Kalyan Samajdar, GM I/c (HSM-1), Mr. Debjit Banerjee, GM (SSM- Mechanical), Mr. M.P. Rajarao, GM (SSM-Electrical), other Officers and employees of the Department.

This filter is crucial in maintaining water quality for the plant’s cooling systems, which are essential for both compressors and the synthesis gas production process, where vaporized ammonia is cracked in furnaces. Effective cooling is essential to maintain operational efficiency and prevent overheating of equipment.

The old water filtering system was ineffective, leading to frequent pipe jamming caused by dust and mud particles in the water. This not only disrupted operations but also increased maintenance costs.

The project was carried out under the leadership of the Mr. C R Mishra and executed by the mechanical team.

The installation of an Amiad filter in the Synthesis Gas Plant is a significant improvement over the conventional water filtration system previously used.
