A senior Shiv Sena leader said that Thackeray expressed unhappiness over politics being played around his nomination.

The state cabinet had recommended Thackeray’s nomination for the two vacant seats in the upper house. Over 20 days later, the governor has not processed the recommendation of the cabinet. On Tuesday, a delegation of MVA ministers met Koshyari to urge him to nominate Thackeray.

A senior Sena leader said Thackeray decided to dial Modi and directly speak to him after he got indications from Koshyari that he would be consulting the Centre before taking a decision on his nomination.

The Sena leader said Thackeray requested Modi to intervene as a political tussle in the middle of Covid-19 outbreak would affect the state’s efforts to control the epidemic. Maharashtra has the highest number of Covid-19 cases among all states.

“Uddhav ji discussed the current political uncertainty in the state with the PM. He expressed unhappiness over the politics being played over his nomination as MLC at a time when the state is combating the coronavirus outbreak,” said a senior Shiv Sena leader requesting anonymity.

With less than a month left for Thackeray to fulfil the constitutional requirement of getting elected to either of the houses of the state legislature, the alleged delay by the Governor has kept the proverbial sword of Damocles hanging over the CM and his government.

Thackeray, who is not a member of either house of the legislature, took oath as the CM on November 28.
He could lose the post if he is not elected to the legislature by May 27. The Shiv Sena is also exploring legal options to tackle the current uncertainty surrounding Thackeray’s nomination.

Deora, who is the former Union minister, described Gandhi as a “true patriot who never compromised on India’s national security”.

Raut, whose party is part of the ruling alliance with the Congress and NCP in Maharashtra, on Wednesday claimed that Gandhi met Karim Lala in Mumbai.

Karim Lala was one of the three top underworld dons of Mumbai for over two decades, from the sixties to the early eighties, the other two being Mastan Mirza alias Haji Mastan and Varadarajan Mudaliar.

Deora said politicians should refrain from “distorting” legacies of prime ministers who are no more.

“Indira ji was a true patriot who never compromised on Indias national security,” he said in a tweet.

“As former @INCMumbai President, I demand that @rautsanjay61 ji withdraws his ill-informed statement.

Political leaders must show restraint before distorting the legacies of deceased Prime Ministers,” Deora further tweeted.

Former Mumbai Congress chief Nirupam said Raut will “repent” if he continues a “false campaign” against Gandhi.

Noting that Raut often shares “poetry of others”, Nirupam said it will be better if the Shiv Sena leader focuses on entertaining Maharashtra with such poetic stuff.

“It will be better if Shiv Sena’s Mr Shayar (poet) focuses on entertaining Maharashtra by sharing light-hearted poetry of others. He will have to repent if he carries out false campaign against former Prime Minister Indira Gandhiji.

He should withdraw the statement he gave about Indiraji yesterday,” Nirupam tweeted in Hindi.

During an interview to the Lokmat media group at its award function in Pune, Raut claimed, “When (underworld don) Haji Mastan came to Mantralaya, the entire secretariat would come down to see him. Indira Gandhi used to meet Karim Lala in Pydhonie (in south Mumbai).

The BJP MLAs raised a large banner that had a printed copy of the front page of the Sena’s mouthpiece Saamana.

It had a report about the promise of a loan waiver by chief minister Uddhav Thackeray.

The BJP took up the issue of farmers as soon as the Lower House convened in the morning and the Leader of Opposition Devendra Fadnavis said his party had moved adjournment motion over compensation for farmers affected by unseasonal rains.

“We want the work of the House to be suspended for the day and discussions must start on the issue of granting Rs 25,000 per hectare compensation to farmers affected by unseasonal rains,” said Fadnavis.
Speaker Nana Patole’s response was drowned in slogans by the BJP’s legislators. When Patole refused the motion saying it did not conform to the rules, the BJP’s legislators moved into the well of the House to protest.

As they started unfurling the Saamana banner, the Speaker stopped them as he asked the names of legislators who were doing it to be recorded. As the banner was unfurled, the Sena MLAs moved in the well and started shouting at their BJP counterparts.

Two MLAs – Nitin Deshmukh (Shiv Sena) and Harish Pimpale (BJP) – both from Akola, nearly came to blows. Senior party leaders from both sides like the BJP’S Ashish Shelar and Sena’s Bhaskar Jadhav intervened to stop the situation from getting uglier.

After this, the House was adjourned for half an hour.

The speaker deferred the calling attention motion after the House reconvened. The business of the day—clearing four bills—was then pushed through amidst sloganeering by the opposition.

The winter session of the Maharashtra Assembly had begun on a chaotic note on Monday in Nagpur as the controversy over former Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s remarks on VD Savarkar dominated the proceedings.

The BJP’s legislators had worn caps with ‘I am Savarkar’ written in Marathi on them on Monday as they arrived for the winter session of the Maharashtra Assembly in Nagpur to protest Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s remark against VD Savarkar.

In a jibe at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for demanding an apology for his ‘Rape in India’ remark, Gandhi on Saturday said, “My name is Rahul Gandhi, not Rahul Savarkar. I will never apologise for speaking the truth and nor will any Congressman.”

Both the Houses of the state assembly were hit by the protests.

In the first meeting of the new cabinet at Sahyadri Guest House in south Mumbai Thackeray said the first decision of the cabinet was to approve Rs 20 crore in funds for the conservation of the Raigad Fort.
Thackeray said he has asked officials, including the state’s chief secretary, to give him complete information on state and central schemes for farmers within the next two days. “Once I get all the details, I will take a decision accordingly,” he said.

“We can paint a better picture if we know the reality. We have sought inputs. Farmers have not got anything, but only assurances. We want to provide concrete help to farmers,” he told reporters after the meeting.
“We want to ensure an atmosphere in the state wherein nobody will feel terrorised,” he said.

At the media briefing, Thackeray was accompanied by his cabinet colleagues Chhagan Bhujbal, Jayant Patil, Balasaheb Thorat and Nitin Raut.Patil.

The newly formed government, amid initial protests from the Sena, has promised to uphold secular values in the state. It also talks about an immediate loan waiver for Maharashtra’s farmers, a new law to ensure 80% reservation in jobs for Maharashtra locals, Re 1 health clinics in all talukas and a Rs 10 thali to provide affordable food to people.

“The alliance partners commit to uphold the secular values enshrined in the Constitution. On contentious issue of national importance as well as of state importance especially having repercussions/consequences on the secular fabric of the nation, the Shiv Sena, the NCP and the Congress will take a joint view after holding consultations and arriving at a consensus,” reads the preamble of the four-page document signed by signed by Uddhav, Patil and Thorat.

Prior to his meeting with Sonia, Sharad Pawar met Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut in Delhi. The 15-minute meeting between Raut and Pawar took place at Pawar’s 6, Janpath residence.

The NCP, Congress and Shiv Sena leaders are said to be in touch with each other over forming a coalition government in Maharashtra after the snapping of ties of between BJP and Shiv Sena over the chief minister’s post.

Sources claim that the Congress and the NCP are willing to support the Shiv Sena to form the government but the two parties are yet to give any concrete assurance to Uddhav Thackeray’s party.

Congress sources said that Sonia Gandhi wants a commitment from Sena that the party will give up its hardline Hindutva agenda before giving support to Uddhav Thackeray-led party to form the government.

The NCP is also engaged in hectic parleys with both the Congress and Shiv Sena leaders but its chief Pawar is still non-committal on supporting the Shiv Sena-led government in Maharashtra.

Mr Pawar on Saturday said the three parties will form government and complete a full term. senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge had said discussion over government formation would be taken forward at a meeting between Mr Pawar and Mrs Gandhi.

NCP’s senior leaders on Sunday met in Mumbai and discussed government formation.

“We had a discussion over the current political situation in the state, and we have come to the conclusion  that the President’s rule should end and an alternative government should be formed,” NCP leader Nawab Malik said .

“Sharad Pawar and Sonia Gandhi will meet on Monday and discuss the possibility of the formation of an alternative government in Maharashtra,” he added.

A meeting between the Congress and Shiv Sena leaders will also take place, former Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan informed on Sunday. “We will find out if we can go ahead or not,” he said.

The Shiv Sena and BJP had contested the Maharashtra Assembly election as allies and won a comfortable majority. On the day of the election results, Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray had reminded BJP president Amit Shah of his “50:50” promise. 

Meanwhile The Shiv Sena took potshots to Bharatiya Janata Party, and said Chhatrapati Shivaji was not the property of any party but belonged to all Maharashtrians. The BJP’s campaign had focussed on the Maratha king, which some political observers saw as trying to the legacy.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday announced that it would not form government in Maharashtra in view of the ally Shiv Sena’s stand to not join them in the efforts.

Announcing the BJP’s decision, Maharashtra BJP president Chandrakant Patil accused the Uddhav Thackeray-led party, which is adamant on its demand for a rotational chief ministership, of “disrespecting” the popular mandate secured by the BJP and the Sena in recent Assembly polls.

“The mandate of the people of Maharashtra was for the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance. Sena has, however, disrespected the mandate, hence we have decided to not stake claim to form government. We have informed our decision to governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari,” Patil told reporters outside Raj Bhavan.

He wished “good luck” to the Sena if it wanted to form the government with the help of Opposition Congress and NCP.

The BJP and the Sena had together won 161 seats in the 288-member House, way above the halfway mark of 145.

Maharashtra is seeing a stand-off between the Sena and its ally BJP over power sharing after the two parties won a simple majority in the October 21 assembly election.

“Nothing like it if the BJP gives the Shiv Sena chief minister’s post. But if the BJP is refusing, an alternative can be given. But the Sena should declare that it is no longer associated with the BJP and NDA. Alternative can be provided after that,” NCP chief spokesperson Nawab Malik said.

Sources in the Sharad Pawar-led party also said that it told the Sena leadership on Tuesday morning that Mr Sawant, the lone Sena minister in the central government, should resign before a new political alignment for government formation can be explored.

“Arvind Sawant should walk out of the government. Only then NCP will open its cards,” the sources said. No party or alliance has staked claim to form government in Maharashtra after the October 24 poll results, as the BJP and Sena are engaged in a tussle over chief minister’s post.

The NCP will be forced to think about alternative if the BJP-Shiv Sena combine fails to form government, state NCP chief Jayant Patil had said earlier on Tuesday.

The Sena, has claimed that the BJP had agreed to a 50:50 power share in the state ahead of the general elections. the Sena claimes a rotational system for the Chief Minister’s post and half the state’s ministerial berths.

In his letter to Mohan Bhagwat, Mr Tiwari said the state has delivered a mandate in favour of the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance. But the BJP’s failure to follow ‘coalition dharma’ is delaying the formation of new government in Maharashtra. Therefore, the RSS “should intervene and resolve the issue,” the letter read.

There has been no response from the RSS but a Nagpur based and RSS supported news paper TARUN BHARAT targeted shivsena for power tussel . Without naming Sanjay Raut, “Tarun Bharat”, said the leader was hurting the chances of BJP-Sena alliance to come to power in Maharashtra.

The pro-right wing daily also called him a “joker” and said “his attempts to portray a picture that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is isolated in the BJP is nothing but pure entertainment.”

Sanjay Raut, the Sena’s Rajya Sabha member and executive editor of its mouthpiece “Saamana”, has been at the forefront of voicing his party’s demands over equal distribution of power and sharing of the chief minister’s post with the BJP in the next Maharashtra government.

The Marathi daily published an editorial titled “Uddhav and Betaal” today which said: “Late Balasaheb Thackeray spent his entire life for wresting power from the Congress and NCP. But this Betaal is
trying hard to shatter his dreams and there will be no disappointment like this to see the Sena dragging behind one loud-mouth.”

Furious with the lack of response from the BJP camp, the Sena has even announced that it was ready to go with Sharad Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party and the Congress to form government.

Even after a meeting between Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and BJP chief Amit Shah, the BJP has not issued response. After the meeting on Monday morning, Mr Fadnavis told reporters that there is a need to form the government in Maharashtra at the earliest and it would be formed.

There was no word on how the BJP would go about it or on any negotiation with the Sena.
