SECL Plans Joint Ventures with Chhattisgarh for Floating Solar and Coal Gasification Projects

BILASPUR. South Eastern Coalfields Ltd. (SECL) is exploring joint ventures with the Chhattisgarh government to develop floating solar and surface coal gasification projects, Chairman and Managing Director Harish Duhan said on Monday. The Bilaspur-based miner aims to install 626 MW of solar capacity by FY2027–28 as part of its clean energy expansion strategy.

Discussions on floating solar projects are underway with the Chhattisgarh State Power Generation Company Limited (CSPGCL), given the State’s vast reservoir network. Mr. Duhan noted that a comprehensive state policy is currently being formulated to guide such initiatives.

Additionally, SECL plans to pursue coal gasification projects under a revenue-sharing model, aligning with its broader diversification and sustainability objectives.

SECL and EDCIL Partner with District Administration to Boost Digital Education in Jashpur Schools

BILASPUR. A major initiative to promote digital education in government schools of
Jashpur district was launched with the signing of a tripartite Memorandum of
Understanding (MoU) between the District Administration, Jashpur, South Eastern
Coalfields Limited (SECL), and Educational Consultants India Limited (EDCIL). The
agreement was signed on December 28, 2025, at Bagia in the presence of Chief
Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai. The MoU was signed by Collector Shri Rohit Vyas on
behalf of the District Administration, General Manager Shri C.M. Verma
representing SECL, and Project Director Shri Vikas Sahrawat on behalf of EDCIL.
Appreciating the initiative, Chief Minister Shri Sai said the project would encourage
innovation, curiosity, and technological skills among students, creating a strong
foundation for their future. Under the agreement, interactive digital panels will be
installed in selected government schools across the district in a phased manner.
These panels will help teachers deliver lessons more effectively through digital
content, videos, presentations, and e-learning resources, making classroom
teaching more engaging and accessible.
The MoU also includes provisions for training teachers, operating the digital
systems, and ensuring their regular maintenance to guarantee long-term and
effective use. SECL has approved an allocation of ₹5 crore under its CSR initiative
for the project, under which 206 interactive panels will be installed in government
schools across Jashpur. This effort is expected to provide hundreds of students with
access to modern digital learning facilities and significantly improve academic
standards in the district, for which Collector Shri Rohit Vyas expressed gratitude to
SECL and EDCIL.

CMD SECL Reviews Operations and Infrastructure at Gevra Coal Mine

Shri Harish Duhan, Chairman and Managing Director of South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), visited the Gevra Area, Asia’s largest coal mine, to review production, productivity and ongoing infrastructure development. During the visit, he inspected the 42 CuM departmental patch and several contractual mining patches, including KCC, Sainik Mining and PNC, and carried out an on-ground assessment at the coal face. He also reviewed the progress of land acquisition and the development status of Rehabilitation and Resettlement (R&R) sites.

A detailed review meeting was held with officials from HEC, RITES, the SECL Siding team and Area Heads of Departments, focusing on key infrastructure projects such as FMC connectivity, CHP–SILO integration and other critical works. Shri Duhan also visited the newly commissioned substation at Gevra Area and appreciated the efforts made to strengthen power infrastructure supporting mining operations. Reiterating SECL’s commitment to national energy security, he emphasized the action plan aimed at achieving the FY 2025–26 production and dispatch targets from this flagship mine within the stipulated timeframe.

In an effort to address the concerns of local landowners and villagers, the administration emphasized the completion of land acquisition and disbursed over Rs 10 crore in compensation to Project Affected Persons (PAPs). South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) organized a one-day workshop on the safe installation and maintenance of Electrical and Mechanical equipment and Heavy Earth Moving Machinery (HEMM) at its Bilaspur Headquarters on 20 November 2025, under the aegis of DGMS. The event was inaugurated by SECL CMD Harish Duhan, along with senior SECL directors, DGMS officials from the Western Zone, and representatives of various trade unions. In his address, Duhan emphasized SECL’s focus on enhancing safety through technological upgrades, mechanization, and timely equipment replacement. Directors N. Franklin Jayakumar and Ramesh Chandra Mahapatra highlighted the role of such workshops in strengthening safety culture, stressing practical improvements, the Zero Harm mission, and adherence to the ‘Take-5 Rule’. Nearly 300 participants from SECL’s electrical, mechanical, and excavation wings took part in the workshop.

Three technical sessions were led by DGMS officials, covering critical electrical topics such as fault current, earthing systems, grading–coordination, current grade systems, and transformers, along with key mechanical guidelines on statutory compliance, logbook maintenance, and accident prevention. The programme featured presentations by SECL’s General Manager (Safety & Rescue) Prakash Rai and General Manager (Excavation) Deepak Kumar, as well as safety briefings by OEMs L&T and Komatsu. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by General Manager (E&M) Srikant Das, with the proceedings anchored by Sheikh Zakir Husain and Mitali Tiwari.

Held in New Delhi, the award ceremony saw SECL being honored for its outstanding achievements in cleanliness, scrap disposal, digital initiatives, and media outreach. The awards were presented by Union Minister of Coal & Mines Shri G. Kishan Reddy, Coal Secretary Shri Vikram Dev Dutt, and Additional Secretary (Coal) Shri Sanoj Kumar Jha, acknowledging SECL’s consistent excellence and commitment to public service.

During the event, SECL was also felicitated for its exceptional efforts in Swachhta Pakhwada 2025, securing the second prize in recognition of its dedication to cleanliness and social responsibility. The company also excelled in record management, reviewing over 2,100 physical files and 23,000 e-files, successfully closing 20,000 e-files, achieving more than 350% of its goal. Innovative sustainability initiatives like the ‘Waste to Wealth’ project at Gevra, converting biodegradable waste into organic fertilizer, and the launch of digital portals for transparency and governance, exemplify SECL’s commitment to inclusive growth, environmental responsibility, and technological advancement.
