233 patients were examined in the camp and were provided free medicines and consultation. Besides, 12 patients were identified for further treatment at Ispat General Hospital under various CSR schemes.

It is worth mentioning here that the Medical camps are being organised by RSP in peripheral villages not only reach out to the people living in remote villages but also extend expensive surgical interventions for free treatment at IGH to the identified people suffering from grave ailments.

The New Plate Mill of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has set a new benchmark in sustainable steel manufacturing with the successful implementation of an innovative emissivity coating in its reheating furnace. This pioneering and first-of-its-kind initiative at RSP, funded under the KFW Environmental Improvement Programme, was seamlessly executed during a scheduled capital repair. It showcased exemplary planning and commitment by the unit to integrate technological advancement with operational efficiency.

The advanced emissivity coating enhances the thermal performance of the furnace by improving heat absorption and re-radiation from refractory surfaces. The initiative is expected to bring about a 5% reduction in Specific Heat Consumption, which translates into both significant cost savings and a meaningful reduction in greenhouse gas emissions such as CO₂ and NOₓ. The project, implemented at a cost of Rs 23.50 lakh, reinforces RSP’s ongoing efforts to minimise its carbon footprint and adopt cleaner production practices.

In addition to fuel efficiency, the coating ensures more uniform heat distribution within the furnace, which directly translates to improved quality and consistency of reheated slabs, an essential prerequisite for achieving superior downstream plate production. Another major benefit is the extended life of furnace refractories, owing to reduced thermal stress, which in turn enhances overall equipment availability and lowers maintenance requirements.

This initiative highlights the New Plate Mill’s leadership in driving innovation aligned with environmental responsibility. It brings long-term advantages across the value chain, from strengthened furnace reliability for operators and measurable cost efficiencies for the organisation, to enhanced sustainability credentials and improved product quality for customers.

The successful execution of this pioneering project was made possible through constant monitoring by Mr. Nilamani Mohapatra, HoS, NPM (Operation), under the active guidance of Mr. R.K. Muduli, CGM (NPM, SPP & Digitalisation).

The capital repair of Sintering Plant-I (SP-I) of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), carried out from 3rd to 14th November 2025, was completed successfully with high precision, stringent coordination, and strict adherence to safety standards. The extensive repair programme covered several critical technological and structural interventions essential for enhancing the sinter plant’s reliability and performance.

Key jobs executed during the shutdown included a comprehensive PLC upgradation to modernize process automation with key support from Instrumentation & Automation Department, PMD liner replacement, and the extension of the palletizing drum shell along with liner replacement in units 45A and 45B. All these tasks required meticulous engineering and planning. The team also replaced the impeller of Main Blower-2 to increase air capacity, renewed multiple material-handling belts, and installed a new cold screen deck plate. Replacement of the sinter breaker unit, cold screen equipment, and renewal of top and bottom beams further strengthened system stability.

Refractory relining was carried out in both furnaces to ensure sustained thermal efficiency. As part of the gas system revamp, 53 meters of 900-mm diameter and 50 meters of 350-mm diameter gas lines were replaced. The ESP emitting electrodes were changed, around 250 meters of pan conveyor rail were renewed, and several leakage points in suction lines were repaired, ensuring smooth and safe plant operations.

The repair activities were completed through the dedicated efforts of SP-1 executives, employees, and the contractor agencies. The jobs were executed in timely manner by the committed SP-I team led by Mr. Shubhrangsu Chakravarty, GM In-Charge (SP-I) under the continuous monitoring and guidance of Mr. Shekhar Narayan, CGM (Sinter).

Commissioned in 1965, SP-1 remains a vital unit of RSP’s sintering operations. With the latest equipment upgrades and automation improvements, SP-1 is now well-positioned for enhanced productivity, improved process control, and greater operational efficiency.
