Steel Authority of India Limited’s (SAIL) Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has recorded its highest-ever April production across multiple key areas of operation, underscoring operational excellence and sustained capacity utilization.

In a remarkable monthly performance, Sinter Plant-III achieved production of 3,13,234 tonnes of sinter, contributing to a best-April total sinter production of 6,11,259 tonnes. Reflecting similar performance best- April production was also achieved in Blast Furnace #5 (BF #5) with a production of 2,73,186 tonnes of hot metal. In April Steel Melting Shop-2 (SMS-2) also excelled by producing 3,18,925 tonnes of crude steel whereas total crude steel from both the Steel Melting Shops stood at 3,43,365 tonnes. In the finishing mills New Plate Mill rolled 88,203 tonnes of plates, while HR Coils (Total) rolling from Hot Strip Mill -2 (HSM-2) stood at 2,30,831 tonnes, both are Best-April figures. Similarly, HR plate production from Sheet Shearing Line (SSL) of HSM-2 clocked an all time high of 26,686 tonnes. April also witnessed the remarkable achievement as total Saleable Steel crossing 3,61,801 tonnes.

This performance highlights RSP’s relentless pursuit of productivity and efficiency, driven by a skilled workforce and strategic operational initiatives. Additionally, RSP met its annual production plans in several critical areas. These included, Oven Pushing in Coke Oven Battery-6 at 363 Nos/Day, Sinter production from Sintering Plant-I at 127,235 tonnes, Sintering Plant- II at 170,790 tonnes, HR Coils for Sale from HSM-2 at 189,205 tonnes, and production of ERW Pipes at 5,019 tonnes.

This outstanding April performance reflects RSP’s commitment to efficiency, innovation, and alignment with SAIL’s production goals.

SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has set a new benchmark in 150 tons steel ladle lining life by achieving an impressive ladle life of 210 heats in Steel Ladle No. 29 of the Steel Melting Shop-II (SMS-II). This achievement surpasses the earlier record of 206 heats, which was set in September 2020.

The milestone reflects the effective teamwork, sustained efforts and complete dedication of employees of the Refractory Engineering (Services) Department and SMS-II. It also highlights the continuous improvement in ladle refractory performance, operational discipline and maintenance practices at RSP. Notably, the steel ladle management set was supplied by M/s RHI Magnesita India Refractories Ltd. The ladle was lined on 15th October, 2025 and successfully completed 210 heats before being taken out of operation on 11th January, 2026.

The enhanced ladle life was achieved through optimized refractory selection, strict adherence to standard operating procedures during tapping and teeming, effective slag control practices, improved temperature management, timely maintenance interventions, and close coordination among the Operations, Refractories and Maintenance departments.

Achievement of such a high ladle life has led to reduced refractory consumption, improved ladle availability, lower operational downtime and enhanced safety, thereby contributing significantly to improved reliability and cost efficiency of steelmaking operations at RSP.
