In a proud moment for SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), Dr. Manoj Panigrahi, Additional CMO of Ispat General Hospital (IGH), has been awarded at the State level by the Directorate of Family Welfare, Department of Health & Family Welfare, Government of Odisha. The honour was conferred in recognition of his outstanding contribution in conducting the highest number of vasectomy procedures during the year 2024-25.

The felicitation ceremony was held on 21st November at Geet Govind Sadan, Bhubaneswar, where senior officials of the Health Department presented Dr. Panigrahi with a Certificate of Appreciation along with a cash award of Rs. 5,000. The award highlights his commitment to promoting male participation in family planning initiatives and strengthening reproductive health services in the region.

Dr. Manoj Panigrahi’s achievement reflects the dedication, expertise, and service-oriented approach of the medical fraternity of Ispat General Hospital under SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant. Groundbreaking Ceremony for Installation of 4th Stove at BF-5 held at SAIL, RSP

The groundbreaking ceremony for the installation of the 4th stove at Blast Furnace No.5 was held on 26^th August, 2025 near the project site at Blast Furnace #5 of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP). Mr. Sudip Pal Chowdhury, ED (Projects), graced the event as the Chief Guest. Present on the occasion were Mr. Sumit Kumar, CGM (Blast Furnace), Mr. S S Panda, CGM (Refractory), Mr. D. K. Sahoo, CGM(Projects), Mr. Rahul Agrawal, CGM (Projects), Mr. Aswini Kumar Sahu, CGM (Projects- Commercial) along with several senior officers of the Plant.

The project being executed in collaboration with Primetals Technologies India Limited, has been awarded with a total value of Rs. 106.48 crore with completion timeline for the project being 20 months from the effective date.

The installation of the 4th stove shall significantly enhance the efficiency and productivity of Blast Furnace No.5, further boosting RSP’s contribution to SAIL’s overall steel production capacity. It will also enable the phased upgradation of the existing stoves as per the detailed modernization plan.

This collaboration underscores SAIL’s commitment to adopting advanced technological solutions for operational excellence and sustainable growth, aligning with its long-term vision of strengthening the steel sector.

Dedicated Neurosurgery Team of Ispat General Hospital of SAIL, RSP restores mobility to patient through urgent spine surgery

The dedicated Neurosurgery team of Ispat General Hospital (IGH), Rourkela, has once again showcased their exceptional expertise by busting the common myth that spine surgeries invariably lead to prolonged recovery periods. The team successfully performed an urgent lumbar spine surgery on a 41-year-old female employee, enabling her to walk again on the very next day after the procedure.

The patient was admitted to the Orthopedics Department with severe low backache radiating to both legs, coupled with inability to stand, walk, turn on the bed, and difficulty in passing urine and stools, three days prior to admission. An MRI revealed an L5-S1 Extruded Disc causing Cauda Equina Syndrome, a condition requiring immediate intervention. She was promptly referred to the Neurosurgery Department, where urgent surgery was planned.

The surgery was conducted by Dr. Manoj Kumar Deo, Senior Consultant (Neurosurgery), with anesthesia support from Dr. Manoranjan Samantray, Additional CMO, and intra-operative assistance from Sister Godhuli and Brother Kamalakar.

In the post-operative period, the patient demonstrated remarkable improvement. She was able to stand and walk on the very next day after the surgery and reported nearly 70% relief from her pre-operative complaints. She is presently recovering well.

This achievement once again reinforces the clinical excellence of the Neurosurgery team at IGH, which continues to deliver advanced, life-changing care to patients in and around Rourkela.

RSP team excels at National Powerlifting Championship 2025

The powerlifting team of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has brought laurels to Rourkela by winning medals at the National Powerlifting Championship 2025 held at Jamshedpur.

Mr. Santosh Bhuyan, GM (MRD) of RSP, bagged the gold medal in the Master-2, 83 kg category (Bench Press). Other members of the RSP team also put up an impressive performance. Mr. Pradyumna Bhutia won the bronze medal in Master-2, 74 kg category (Bench Press), Mr. Asish Mohapatra secured the silver medal in the 120 kg Junior Class, while Ms. Banani Biswas clinched the gold medal in the Senior, 63 kg Class and was adjudged as the “Strong Woman of India”.

The commendable achievements of the RSP team at the national level once again reflect the plant’s strong sporting culture and commitment to promoting talent beyond the shop floor.

Awards presented by SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant to meritorious students of Rourkela

The meritorious students of Rourkela City were awarded by SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) for their outstanding academic performance in Class-10 and Calss-12 examinations conducted by different Boards at the Samman Samaroh organised at Civic Centre on 14^th August, 2025.

Mr. Alok Verma, Director In-Charge of Rourkela Steel Plant presented the ‘Best Academic Performance Award – 2024’ to 14 students for excelling in various Board examinations in Class-10 and Class-12.

Under the ‘Best Academic Performance Award’ in the Class X category Om Pratik Palai of Saraswati Shishu Vidyamandir, bagged the topper’s award in HSC Exam conducted by BSE(Odisha).

The joint topper in ICSE Exam conducted by CISCE, New Delhi were Mihika Agarwal of St. Joseph’s Convent School, Samant Kaniska Dhal of Chinmaya Vidyalaya, E.M. School, and Debabrata Panda, St. Paul’s School. Anwesha Satpathy of Deepika English Medium School, Sec-5 topped the AISSE Exam conducted by CBSE, New Delhi.

Similarly in the 10+2 under Council of Higher Secondary Education Board, Odisha, Roma Kumari Razak of Science Stream, and Nandini Kumbhar of Arts Stream from Government Higher Secondary School, Rourkela and Priyadarshini Mohanty of Commerce stream from Municipal Higher Secondary School, Rourkela received the toppers awards.

The top rankers of Class-12 CBSE Board Examination in Science, Commerce, and Arts stream were Anandita Bhuyan from Deepika English Medium School, Dhriti Parmar and Aditya Prasad both from Delhi Public School respectively.

ISC Board Examination in Science, Commerce and Arts stream were topped by Ayushi Kumari, Barri Manognya, and Chandresha Das, all from St. Joseph’s Convent School, Hamirpur.

Each of the students was given award consisting of cash award of Rs. 10,000/- and a certificate of merit. Mihika Agarwal, Samant Kaniska Dhal, and Debabrata Panda were awarded with a special award of Rs. 10,000/-.

Seven students of RSP run schools also received the Nehru Memorial Award for being toppers in their respective schools in various Board examinations. The top rank holders of Class X Board Examination were Ashlesha Sahoo (ICSE) of IEMS, Sector – 20, Sneha Singh (ICSE) of IEMS, Sector – 22 and Subhalaxmi Sahoo, (AHSC Exam) of Deepika Ispat Sikshya Sadan. Khushi Choudhary of Science stream, Khushi Nety of Arts stream and Sanchita Panigrahi of Commerce stream all from Ispat Vidya Mandir, Sec-19 were the toppers in Class – XII who received the award. Topper of Class XII of IEMS, Sec-20, Supriya Sahoo was also awarded. Each of the students were presented with cash award of Rs. 3,000/- and a Certificate of Merit.

Pre-Retirement Employee Empowerment Workshop ‘Roshni’ held at SAIL, RSP

A Pre- retirement employee empowerment workshop ‘ROSHNI’ was held at CPTI Centre of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant on 8th August, 2025. Mr. Hiralal Mohapatra, CGM (Environment & Utilities) was the Chief Guest of the inaugural session. Mr. R K Verma, GM (HR- BE, IED & HA) was the Guest of Honour. 19 employees including executives of the plant and Odisha Group of Mines, who will be superannuating in the month of August 2025 attended the session.

The sessions at ‘Roshni’ encompassed a wide spectrum of topics crucial for a smooth retirement transition. Dr. Shivalkar, Assistant CMO (Medical) addressed health-related concerns and strategies for a healthier post-retirement life in the following session.

Matters related to Cyber Security issues were discussed by Mr. V P Arya, DGM (C&IT), where advantages of Internet in digital era was explained and insights were provided into the world of cyber threats and security for helping the participants to safeguard their digital presence.

In the session on Finance Mr. D K Dash, Deputy Manager (Finance & Accounts) dealt with procedures for smooth final settlement and effective finance management for ensuring stability in the later phase. Mr. Pappu Kumar, AGM (Finance & Accounts) talked about the Financial Security Planning.

To cope with the significant transition phase and lead a purposeful and proactive life, Mr. Babula Nahak, AGM (CP-2) deliberated on Positive Mindset preparation. The details of quarter vacation and retention policies within the organization were discussed by Mr. Bharat Mahanta, Deputy Manager (Town Services). SAIL Mediclaim Scheme was addressed by Ms. Jyoti Oreya, AGM (HR-ER &C)

At the outset Mr. S P Majhi, Assistant Manager (HR-ER & C) welcomed the gathering while Ms. Jyoti Oreya , coordinated the programme along with Mr. K K Parida, Labour Inspector and the HR-ER team.

The aim of the ‘Roshni’ workshop is to prepare the retiring employees in a comprehensive manner to embrace retirement with positivity, enthusiasm and preparedness.

World Breastfeeding Day 2025 observed at IGH of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant

World Breastfeeding Day 2025 was observed at the New Conference Hall of Ispat General Hospital (IGH) of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) on 6^th August. The event was organized by the Nurses Training Institute (NTI) of IGH. Dr. (Ms) Prativa Sadangi, Chief Medical Officer (M&HS), graced the occasion as the Chief Guest while Dr. Prashant Kumar Patra, President, Indian Association of Pediatrics (IAP) Sundargarh Branch was the Guest of Honour. Other dignitaries present on the occasion included Dr. Sonia Joshi, Additional CMO (M&HS) and In-charge, NTI and Dr. Archana Behera, Additional CMO (M&HS). The function was attended by the students and staff of NTI.

The theme for this year’s Breast Feeding Day was, “Prioritize Breastfeeding, Create Sustainable Support System”, emphasizing the need for a collective and sustained effort to support breastfeeding practices in the community. The programme commenced with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by the dignitaries present, marking an auspicious beginning.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Prativa Sadangi emphasized the critical role of breastfeeding in ensuring a healthy start to a child’s life and reducing infant mortality. She highlighted the importance of creating a supportive environment, both in healthcare facilities and at the community level to encourage mothers to breastfeed.

Dr. Prashant Kumar Patra, in his address, shed light on the medical and emotional benefits of breastfeeding for both infants and mothers. He appreciated the efforts of IGH and NTI in organizing awareness programs and training sessions that strengthen pediatric and maternal care.

The other dignitaries also spoke on the occasion, underlining the need for collaborative support among healthcare professionals, families, and policy-makers to promote and sustain breastfeeding practices.

A theme-based presentation was made by the Department of Pediatrics, which offered insights into sustainable practices and policies to enhance breastfeeding support.

As part of the celebration, prizes were distributed by the dignitaries to GNM students of NTI who had excelled in competitions and activities related to the theme.

Ms. Bidyut Prabha Goth, Principal (NTI) delivered the welcome address while Ms. Jyotirmayee, Tutor (NTI) coordinated the function.

SPSB Swimming Championship 2025 Runners up SAIL, RSP team felicitated

The SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) Swimming Team, which emerged as Runners-Up in the SPSB Swimming Championship 2025, was felicitated at a special ceremony held at the Biju Patnaik Hockey Stadium, Sector-5. Mr. T.G. Kanekar, CGM (TS & CSR), presided over the programme and felicitated the team members for their commendable performance. He was also presented with the trophy won by the RSP team.

Mr. Kanekar congratulated the team members for their remarkable performance and exhorted them to continue striving for excellence to bring more glory for the company.

Mr. Raghu Nandan Padhy, Deputy Manager (Sports) coordinated the programme.

Notably, the RSP team exhibited an outstanding performance at the Inter Steel Plant Swimming Championship 2025, held in July at the JRD Tata Sports Complex, Jamshedpur. RSP secured total 16 points to become the Runners up. The team won 1 Gold, 3 Silver, and 3 Bronze medals. The RSP team was led by Mr. Prasenjit Ray, DGM (RMHP), who served as the Coach-cum-Team Manager. Among the notable individual performances, Mr. Pradeep Kumar Barik from Roll Shop, won 2 silver medals in the 50 metre Freestyle and 50 metre Butterfly events, while Mr. Rudra Narayan Sahoo from Repair Shop (Electrical) bagged 2 Bronze medals in the 50m and 100m Backstroke categories. Mr. Suryasen Murmu of SMS-II secured a Silver in 100m Freestyle and Mr. Aditya Pujari son of Mr. Ajay Pujari of HSM-2 Department won a Bronze in the same event under the Employee Ward category. The highlight of the championship was RSP’s remarkable victory in the 4x50m Freestyle Relay, where the team of Aditya Pujari, Rudra Narayan Sahoo, Pradeep Barik, and Suryasen Murmu clinched the Gold medal with a timing of 02:38.04.

Performance Enhancement Plan Workshop on Armour Grade Plate Production Held at SAIL, RSP

A Performance Enhancement Plan Workshop focusing on achieving production target of Armour Grade Plates by 300Tons per month to 500 Tons per month commenced on 17th June, 2025 at the Learning & Development Department of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP). Mr. P. K. Sahoo, CGM (HR-L&D), Mr. R K Bisare, CGM (NPM & SPP), and Dr. P K Padhi, GM In-Charge (SPP) were present on the opening session of the two-day workshop along with several other CGMs, HoDs, and senior officers from associated departments. It was attended by participants from key departments including Special Plate Plant (SPP), PPC, RCL, PM, NPM, Marketing and F&A.

In the opening session, Mr. B Mahato, Senior Manager (SPP), gave a comprehensive presentation covering current production status, the targets set and the challenges ahead for producing 500T/month armour grade plates.

Mr. S N Rao, DGM (F&A) discussed the current market and financial status of the armour grade plates.

The workshop includes detailed syndicate discussions, followed by action plan presentations. The concluding session on 18th May will involve a detailed review and finalization of the action plan.

The program began with a welcome address by Dr. P K Padhi, while Mr. R K Bisare set the tone for the function. The workshop is being facilitated by Ms. Arnnapurna Behera, Senior Manager (HR-L&D), Mr. Shams Gazali, Manager, (SPP) and Mr. H. C. Panda, Junior Engineer (L&D).

In-house technology intervention at Sintering Plant-II of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant helps accrue huge savings

Demonstrating exceptional technical expertise and innovation, an enterprising team from Sintering Plant-II (SP-II) of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), has successfully developed an in-house solution to overcome a critical operational challenge in the weighing system of SP-II. The intervention has resulted in substantial savings exceeding Rs. 10 lakh and significantly enhanced operational excellence.

The team successfully replaced the obsolete communication card (JKT card) in the weighing system with an indigenously designed and developed system. The new system has been commissioned and is functioning efficiently, further improving operational reliability.

Notably, SP-II produces about 2 million tonnes of sinter of the desired quality to feed the Blast Furnaces. The plant receives raw materials such as basemix, coke, limestone, and dolomite from the Raw Material Handling Plant (RMHP), calcined lime from CP-2, and -5mm sinter fraction from the Blast Furnaces. These materials are fed through weigh feeders and loss-in-weight systems, measured precisely by belt weighers, and mixed in the Mixing and Balling Drum before entering the sintering process.

The raw material feeders operate on a tons-per-hour basis, with set points and feed rates controlled through a closed-loop system using the Distributed Control System (DCS), Remote Control Unit (RCU), and Weigh Feeder Control (WFC). Communication among these systems relied on analog signals interfaced via a common component known as the JKT card.

In operation since the plant’s commissioning in 1995, these JKT cards had become obsolete, leading to frequent erratic feeding and occasional malfunctions. Moreover, due to their obsolescence, no spare parts were available, and a complete replacement of the weighing system would have required a massive investment.

Rising to the challenge, a dedicated SP-II team comprising Mr. P.K. Nath, Deputy Manager; Mr. C.B. Munda, Deputy Manager; Mr. S.S. Sar, Junior Officer; and Mr. A. Maji, OCT Trainee, led by Mr. S.S. Jena, DGM & Head of Section, thoroughly studied the card’s functions and successfully designed a replacement system using in-house signal isolators and signal converter cards. The new system has since been commissioned and is operating flawlessly.

The innovative project was carried out under the active guidance and support of Mr. S.K. Padhi, GM In-Charge & HoD, SP-II, and Mr. Sekhar Narayan, CGM (Sinter).

The in-house intervention has not only ensured trouble-free operations but also paves the way for similar cost-effective innovations in other sections of the plant.

This achievement exemplifies the commitment of RSP employees to innovation and cost optimization, contributing significantly to operational excellence and self-reliance.
