Though considered non-life-threatening, vigilant management is desirable to prevent further outbreaks, especially because of the dreadful experience of the Covid-19 pandemic, according to the study.

Tomato Flu: Symptoms

The symptoms of this rare viral infection are the eruption of red and painful blisters throughout the body that gradually enlarges to the size of a tomato and is currently in an “endemic state”.

Although the virus shows symptoms similar to those of Covid-19 – including fever, fatigue,  body aches and rashes on skin — the report in the medical journal suggests that it could be an after-effect of chikungunya or dengue fever in children rather than a viral infection.

“The virus could also be a new variant of the viral hand, foot, and mouth disease, a common infectious disease targeting mostly children aged 1-5 years and immunocompromised adults…,” the Lancet study explained.

As of now, no antiviral drugs or vaccines are available for the treatment or prevention of tomato flu.

Experts studied over 1.25million people with Covid and found new diagnoses of psychosis, dementia, seizures and brain fog were more common during the two years after having the virus than with other respiratory infections like the flu.

Children saw fewer increases in most conditions than adults, apart from seizures and psychosis. The study found that in adults, the risk of having a depression or anxiety diagnosis initially increased post Sras-CoV-2 infection but returned to the  same with other respiratory infections after a relatively short time.

The delta and omicron variants were linked with more disorders than the alpha variant. Omicron is related with similar neurological and psychiatric risks. Lead author Professor Paul Harrison, from the University of Oxford, said the study showed that brain conditions linked to Covid may far outlast the pandemic. He called for research into ‘what can be done to prevent or treat these conditions’.

But Professor Paul Garner, from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, cautioned that an increased risk of dementia and psychosis may be related to ‘societal upheaval’ rather than to Covid itself.

‘I think we need to be careful in the interpretation of the reported small increases in dementia and psychosis: these are, in my opinion, more likely to be related to the societal upheaval and dystopia we have been living through rather than being a direct effect of the virus,’ he said.

Pandemic-related disruptions, increasing inequalities in access to vaccines, and the diversion of resources from routine immunization are leaving too many children without protection against measles and other vaccine-preventable diseases.

The risk for large outbreaks has increased as communities relax social distancing practices and other preventive measures for COVID-19 implemented during the height of the pandemic. In addition, with millions of people being displaced due to conflicts and crises including in Ukraine, Ethiopia, Somalia and Afghanistan, disruptions in routine immunization and COVID-19 vaccination services, lack of clean water and sanitation, and overcrowding increase the risk of vaccine-preventable disease outbreaks.

Almost 17,338 measles cases were reported worldwide in January and February 2022, compared to 9,665 during the first two months of 2021. As measles is very contagious, cases tend to show up quickly when vaccination levels decline. The agencies are concerned that outbreaks of measles could also forewarn outbreaks of other diseases that do not spread as rapidly.

Apart from its direct effect on the body, which can be lethal, the measles virus also weakens the immune system and makes a child more vulnerable to other infectious diseases like pneumonia and diarrhoea, including for months after the measles infection itself among those who survive. Most cases occur in settings that have faced social and economic hardships due to COVID-19, conflict, or other crises, and have chronically weak health system infrastructure and insecurity.
