Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala’s proposal to consider a dedicated government department for older adults has reignited discussions on the challenges and opportunities associated with India’s ageing population. The move comes amid growing concerns over rising healthcare costs, loneliness, dementia, chronic illnesses and the increasing number of elderly people living alone as family sizes shrink and younger generations migrate for employment. With one of the highest proportions of senior citizens in the country, Kerala is often seen as a glimpse into India’s demographic future.

Experts and social impact practitioners, however, argue that the conversation should extend beyond ageing and dependency to include longevity and active living. While traditional policy discussions have largely focused on healthcare, assisted living, insurance and welfare support, many people in their 50s and 60s today remain healthy, productive and eager to contribute to society. This shift is prompting a rethinking of how individuals approach work, learning, relationships and retirement in the later stages of life.

The growing longevity of the population is increasingly being viewed as a societal transformation rather than merely a healthcare challenge. Observers note that longer and healthier lives are redefining conventional life stages and creating new opportunities for continued engagement, purpose and contribution. As India prepares for a rapidly ageing population, the debate is expanding from how to care for older adults to how best to support meaningful and fulfilling lives over a longer lifespan.

PHDCCI Organises Awareness Session on National Pension System (NPS) for Corporates in Collaboration with PFRDA

The PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI), in collaboration with the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA), successfully organised an Awareness Session on the National Pension System (NPS) for Corporates in Gurugram on 29 May 2026. The session witnessed active participation from senior HR professionals, CFOs, finance leaders, and corporate decision-makers, reflecting the growing interest in structured and tax-efficient retirement solutions for employees.

Welcoming the participants, Ms Babeeta Sharma, Director, PHDCCI, highlighted the increasing importance of long-term financial security for employees and emphasised the role of NPS as a sustainable, transparent, and future-ready retirement planning instrument for corporates.

Delivering the keynote address, Mr Rahul Ravindran, Executive Director, PFRDA, shared valuable insights into the vision, regulatory framework, and growth trajectory of NPS in India. He elaborated on the tax benefits available to both employers and employees and underscored how NPS aligns with global best practices in retirement planning.

The session also featured detailed discussions on Flexi Payouts, Retirement Income Schemes (RIS), and Drawdown options under NPS. Mr Prodeepto Chatterjee, Deputy General Manager, PFRDA, provided practical insights into post-retirement financial planning solutions and retirement income management.

Mr A. Ramesh Kumar, Assistant General Manager, PFRDA, addressed the participants on the operational and procedural aspects of NPS for corporates. He explained the digital onboarding process, compliance framework, contribution structures, and the ease of implementation for companies integrating NPS into their employee benefit programmes.

An interactive Open House Session enabled participants to engage directly with PFRDA officials on key aspects such as tax optimisation under Section 80CCD(2), portability benefits, contribution flexibility, and long-term wealth creation through market-linked returns.

The session concluded with a vote of thanks by Ms Babeeta Sharma, Director, PHDCCI, who appreciated the support of PFRDA officials and the active participation of industry members.

The event reaffirmed the commitment of PHDCCI and PFRDA towards strengthening India’s retirement ecosystem by promoting greater corporate participation in the National Pension System and enhancing long-term financial security for the workforce.
