NTPC and Maharashtra Government Scale Up Pumped Storage Project Capacities

MUMBAI: NTPC Limited and the Government of Maharashtra have officially signed an addendum to their existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to significantly expand the capacity of upcoming Pumped Storage Projects (PSPs). This update follows the original agreement signed on September 3, 2024, which initially planned for 1,800 MW across two sites. Following detailed technical assessments and optimization studies of the topography and reservoir capacities, the Amba PSP has been enhanced from 800 MW to 1,500 MW, while the Kumbhe PSP capacity has been revised from 1,000 MW to 1,100 MW. These revisions are designed to maximize resource utilization and bolster the overall generation potential of the state’s clean energy infrastructure.

The signing ceremony took place in the presence of Chief Minister of Maharashtra Shri Devendra Fadnavis and Minister of Revenue Shri Chandrashekhar Bawankule, along with senior officials from both the state government and NTPC. While the project parameters have been upgraded to a total of 2,600 MW, all other terms and conditions of the original MoU remain unchanged. This collaborative effort highlights a strengthened commitment to accelerating sustainable energy initiatives and enhancing India’s energy security through reliable, large-scale storage solutions.

NTPC Simhadri’s unit head Ayaskanta Jena announced on March 30 that the ₹1.85 lakh crore Pudimadaka Green Hydrogen Hub is entering the active execution stage, with key work packages being finalized. The project, launched last year with Prime Minister Narendra Modi laying the foundation stone, is on track to establish India’s first integrated Green Hydrogen Hub near Visakhapatnam.
