NEW DELHI. Indian Railways and the State Bank of India (SBI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to offer enhanced insurance benefits to railway employees holding salary accounts with SBI. Signed in the presence of Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the agreement increases the accidental death insurance cover to ₹1 crore, a significant rise from the previous ₹30,000 to ₹1.20 lakh coverage under the Central Government Employees Group Insurance Scheme (CGEGIS). Additionally, employees will receive natural death insurance coverage of ₹10 lakh without any premium or medical tests, benefiting nearly 7 lakh railway staff members.

The MoU also introduces complimentary insurance provisions, including air accident death insurance of ₹1.60 crore along with up to ₹1 crore coverage on RuPay Debit Cards, personal accident permanent total disablement cover of ₹1 crore, and permanent partial disability cover of up to ₹80 lakh. This initiative is seen as a compassionate, employee-centric step, especially aimed at frontline Group C railway personnel and other staff, offering them financial security and peace of mind.

Indian Railways has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) for the installation of Machine Vision Based Inspection System (MVIS) for monitoring the health of rolling stock.

MVIS is a modern, AI/ML-based technology solution deployed on wayside that captures high-resolution images of the under-gear of moving trains and automatically detects any hanging, loose, or missing components. On detecting anomalies, the system generates real-time alerts to facilitate prompt response and preventive action.

The MoU was formally signed by Shri Sumit Kumar, Director (Project & Development), Railway Board, and Shri Jawahar Lal, GGM (Mechanical), DFCCIL at Rail Bhawan, New Delhi, in the presence of Shri B. M. Agrawal, Member (Traction & Rolling Stock), Shri Praveen Kumar, Managing Director, DFCCIL, and senior officials from the Railway Board and DFCCIL.

Under the terms of the MoU, DFCCIL will be responsible for the procurement, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of four MVIS units. This revolutionary system marks a first for Indian Railways. The technology is expected to significantly enhance the safety of train operations, reduce manual inspection efforts and help avoid potential accidents/service disruptions.

This initiative also aligns with IR’s broader objective of introducing modern, intelligent systems to the railway ecosystem. The signing of this MoU is poised to open new avenues for digital transformation in rail safety in building a future-ready rail infrastructure.

Digital Transformtion Hugely Ugrading Customer Services

Bengaluru, January 16, 2025 – The Indian Railways has been going through tremendous digital transformation resulting in phenomenal upgradation of customer services, said Shri G V L Satya Kumar, Managing Director, Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), during an address on “Driving Digital Transformation in Indian Railways: The Role of Technology in Enhancing Efficiency, Safety, and Passenger Experience” at the 19th India Digital Summit today. As an example he pointed out, “The ticketing system has seen a substantial increase in capacity, from issuing 1000 tickets per minute to 25,000 tickets per minute today, with plans to reach 2.5 lakh tickets per minute by August 2025.”

The two-day summit is being organized by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) in collaboration with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India, and is supported by Digital India, Skill India and Make in India.

According to Shri Satya Kumar, “The rail industry has moved towards highly sensorized systems for asset management, including ultrasonic floor detectors, track recording cars, and oscillation monitoring systems. These systems provide real-time data on track conditions, enabling efficient management of the rail network.”

“The Indian Railways’ digital transformation began in 1986 with the introduction of computerized ticketing systems. Over the years, the system has undergone significant upgrades, including the meshing of data centers, web ticketing, and mobile ticketing,” he added.

While giving an overview of the Indian Railways, he mentioned that the “Indian Railways transports 22 million passengers daily and carries 4.2 billion tons of freight. It operates 10,000 passenger trains, 3.5 lakh coaches, and deploys 15,000 locomotives.

Shri Satya Kumar ended the session by saying, “One of the greatest strengths of CRIS is that it does not rely on private software developers, instead using its own team of 950+ core engineers to develop and maintain the systems.”

IDS 2025, held from January 16-17, recognises digital excellence and outstanding marketing achievements annually across various business and technology sectors. This year’s theme is Bharat’s Digital Path—Empowering Future Innovators.

IDS is being Powered by NPCI. Amazon.in and MPL are Platinum partners. Among Gold Partners are PhonePe; Australia Trade and Investment Commission; IDA Ireland; Paytm ads, Jagran New Media and Exotel. Route Mobile is the Cloud Communications Partner. Silver Partners include AWS, ShareChat, Shiprocket; Times Internet, and TV9 Network.

The Indian Railways is upgrading the Sleeper Class and unreserved General Class coaches as AC (air-conditioned) coaches. This will allow the Railways to roll out all-AC trains, without taking away the option of low-cost travel for the public, said officials. Officials said the upgraded Sleeper Class coach will be an “economical” AC 3-tier Class, in between what is now the AC 3-tier Class and non-AC Sleeper Class.

Sources said the Rail Coach Factory in Kapurthala has been entrusted with the job of making the prototype of the upgraded Sleeper Class coach, which will have 83 berths instead of the current 72. Internally, the upgraded coach is being termed as “AC 3-tier Tourist Class”, an official said.

“It is like an affordable AC 3-tier Class,” said a senior official, adding that the idea is to make AC trains affordable for all.

In the first phase, about 230 such coaches are being manufactured. Each coach is estimated to cost about Rs 2.8-3 crore, which is about 10 per cent more than the manufacturing cost of the current AC 3-tier Class coach. However, with more berths and expected demand, the new ‘economical’ AC 3-tier Class is estimated to bring in more earnings.

The unreserved General Class coaches are also set to get an upgrade as a 100-seater AC Class. While the design for this is being finalised, officials working on the project told that the initial design had provision for 105 seats per coach.

The last time the government tried to roll out an economical AC 3-tier Class was during the UPA-I government (2004-09), when Lalu Prasad was the Railways Minister. Introduced in the Garib Rath Express trains as ‘AC Economy Class’, a side-middle berth was added to increase capacity and profitability. However, passengers complained of discomfort and overcrowding, and these coaches were eventually discontinued.
In the new ‘economical AC 3-tier Class’, more space has been created by shifting the electrical units, and by doing away with the compartments for storing linen sets.

As reported by The Indian Express earlier, the Railways has decided to stop distribution of blankets and linen sets in AC coaches, even post-Covid.

Sources said the idea behind the upgrade is to gradually move towards an all-AC model, although a formal decision on this is yet to be taken. Meanwhile, the existing stock of non-AC coaches will continue to operate, officials said. “Whether these will be phased out eventually is a call yet to be taken,” said an official.
