Power Ministry Orders Major Governance Overhaul in THDCIL and NEEPCO; Board Strength Halved, NTPC CMD to Chair Both PSUs

NEW DELHI. In a significant governance reform in the power sector, the Ministry of Power has approved a comprehensive restructuring of the Boards of Directors of THDC India Limited (THDCIL) and North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO).

According to an order issued on June 11, 2026, the Competent Authority has approved reducing the board strength of both central public sector enterprises by 50 per cent, bringing the number of directors down from 16 to 8.

As part of the restructuring, the existing post of Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) in both companies has been redesignated as Managing Director (MD) with immediate effect.

The order further stipulates that the Chairman and Managing Director of NTPC will serve as the Non-Executive Chairperson of both THDCIL and NEEPCO. The arrangement comes into force immediately.

In another key decision, the Ministry has discontinued the prevailing additional-charge mechanism for the top executive position in the two companies. Future appointments to the post of Managing Director will be made in accordance with established government procedures through the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) and with the approval of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC).

The move is aimed at streamlining corporate governance, strengthening oversight, and aligning the management structure of the two NTPC subsidiaries with the government’s broader public sector reforms agenda.

Power Ministry met with the IES Taskforce to speed up building a national digital infrastructure for the energy sector.

GURGRAM. The Ministry of Power convened the India Energy Stack (IES) Taskforce in New Delhi on November 24, 2025, to accelerate the development of a unified Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) for the nation’s power sector. Led by senior experts including Dr. R. S. Sharma, Sh. Pramod Verma, and Sh. Pradeep Kumar Pujari, the meeting focused on reviewing the draft IES Strategy and Architecture Documents (version 0.1). REC Limited, serving as the Nodal Agency with FSR Global as Knowledge Partner, emphasized that the guidance received will strengthen the initiative, which aims to build a secure, interoperable digital backbone for the entire energy value chain.

IES to Enable Open, Integrated, Future-Ready Energy Systems

The Taskforce discussed how the IES will serve as a transformative DPI—similar to Aadhaar and UPI—by connecting stakeholders, enabling open data exchange, and breaking sectoral silos through common standards, open APIs, and federated registries. These capabilities are expected to enhance DISCOM efficiency, boost renewable integration, support green energy markets, and deliver consumer-centric services. Inputs from the meeting will guide document refinement and the launch of the pilot phase, with monthly Taskforce reviews planned. The IES project is targeted for completion by July 2026.

Shri Jitendra Srivastava said the meeting marks an important step toward building a unified, future-ready digital backbone for India’s energy sector. He added that the Taskforce’s guidance will strengthen the IES framework and guide its refinement and pilot phase.

PTC India plans to provide 24×7 power trading solutions: CMD

PTC India Limited is planning to provide round-the-clock (RTC) power offerings by “blending” green energy with thermal, its CMD Rajib Kumar Mishra has said. The offerings will also include storage solutions, the official made the remarks at the company’s 24th Annual Day in the national capital.

PTC India aims to provide round-the-clock power offerings by blending renewable energy with thermal generation and storage solutions,” Mishra said.
