The unprecedented spike in the number of daily cases comes at a time when experts have been pointing out overall laxity in maintaining social distance..

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday pulled up the AAP government for relaxing safety norms for public gatherings. A bench of Justices Hima Kohli and Subramanium Prasad also noted that the wearing of masks has not been made mandatory in Delhi. The court also asked the government why it has increased the number of people allowed in weddings, public transport etc.

This trend has continued to compress the active caseload of India which is presently 4.98 lakhs. With a contribution of only 5.63% of India’s total positive cases, India’s active caseload stands at 4,89,294, well below the 5 lakh mark.

The Recovery Rate has also been boosted with the trend of recoveries exceeding new cases. It presently stands at 92.89%. Total Recoveries today are 80,66,501. The gap between Recovered cases and Active cases has steadily widened to75,77,207.

78% of the new recovered cases are concentrated in 10 States/UTs.

Maharashtra reported the maximum number of single day recoveries with 9,164 newly recovered cases. 7,264 people recovered in Delhi followed closely by Kerala which reported 7,252 new recoveries.

10 States and UTs reported 78% of the new cases.

Delhi observed another spike and reported the highest daily new cases, also its highest tally so far with 8,593 new cases. Delhi is followed by Kerala with 7,007 cases and Maharashtra with 4,907 cases.

550 case fatalities have been reported in the past 24 hours. Case Fatality Rate stands at 1.48% today.

Of these new deaths, ten States/UTs account for 80%. Maharashtra accounted for 22. 7% share with 125 fatalities. Delhi and West Bengal follow with 85 and 49 new deaths, respectively.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said that a staggering 47 new cases have tested positive for Covid-19 in the Greater Mumbai area.

The civic authority added that the sudden rise in coronavirus cases is due to cumulative figures of tests conducted by private labs being compiled after four days.

Out of the 47 new Covid-19 cases, 18 cases are those whose tests were done at private labs between March 24 and March 28. These patients are already undergoing treatment. This takes the toll of active coronavirus cases in Mumbai to 147. So far, eight patients have died due to coronavirus in Mumbai and 15 patients have been discharged.

On the increase of positive cases, the BMC said, “To improve testing facilities, certain private labs have been approved and 18 patients were diagnosed between date March 24 and March 28 across various private labs. All these patients are being followed up on by the BMC health department. As these 18 cases are included in the list today there appears to be a rise in cases, but it is mainly due to vigorous contact tracing by the health teams and enhanced testing in public and private labs. We are ensuring proper preventive steps to control the spread of disease.”

The BMC also confirmed that an 80-year-old male Covid-19 patient passed away at the Fortis Hospital, Mulund on Saturday. He had co-morbid conditions including acute respiratory distress, hypertension and ischemic heart disease. He was admitted to the private hospital on March 27 and died a day later. The deceased tested positive for Covid-19 on March 29, a day after his demise.

“As a containment measure, areas surrounding the positive cases including 1 lakh houses and 3,87,000 people are being surveyed to trace the contacts of positive cases. The teams are also ensuring the home quarantine measures are being followed. In addition, digital mapping of the containment zone is being undertaken and it will be displayed on BMC’s website for citizen information and precaution,” read a statement.

US President Donald Trump decided late Saturday against imposing a broad two-week lockdown on New York and its neighbors after a strong pushback from local political leaders and warnings of the panic it could spark.

“A quarantine will not be necessary,” Trump tweeted, some eight hours after he stunned the New York metropolitan region, the epicenter of the US coronavirus outbreak, with a proposal to place it under quarantine to prevent residents from leaving.

Trump had indicated earlier he was responding to worries in other states, particularly Florida, that travelers from the greater New York city area could spread COVID-19 in their communities.

He told reporters that “heavily infected” New Yorkers were a threat to Florida, a popular southern holiday destination for people in the northeast.

New York state has reported more than 53,000 cases of the new coronavirus, out of more than 122,000 nationwide.

New York city alone reported a surge of 155 deaths Saturday, taking the city’s total to 617, more than one-quarter of the 2,147 across the United States, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
Neighboring New Jersey has reported over 11,100 COVID-19 cases.

A lockdown on the area like the one Trump was weighing would have been the harshest measure yet taken by the US government to slow the spread of the disease.

Cuomo told earlier that a lockdown on travel in and out of the global financial and trade hub would not be legal or make sense — especially since there are already local controls on movements.

“Why you would want to just create total pandemonium on top of a pandemic, I have no idea,” he said.

“New York city, New Jersey and southern Connecticut is the global capital of the world for commerce and for finance,” said Lamont.

“If you care as much as the president does about getting this economy going again, you’ve got to be very careful about what you say and what you don’t say.”

Yet Trump appeared to be echoing concerns in other states that visiting New Yorkers could exacerbate the spread of coronavirus.

In Rhode Island, about 130 miles (210 kilometers) northeast of New York city, police and national guard were knocking on doors of homes where cars had New York license plates to remind them of a requirement to self-quarantine.

Florida has a large population of retirees, but has so far only reported slightly more than 4,000 coronavirus cases.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a political ally of Trump, issued executive orders this week mandating two-week self-quarantines for anyone arriving or recently arrived from New York and Louisiana, another US hotbed of the disease.
