India reporting 80,472 new cases and 1,179 deaths in the last 24 hours ending 8 am on Wednesday, the total number of coronavirus infections crossed the 62 lakh-mark to reach 62,25,764. Of the total, 97,497 people have succumbed to the virus, 9,40,441 are active cases, while as many as 51,87,826 people have been treated and discharged so far.

On Tuesday, daily coronavirus cases in India dropped below 75,000 and less than 1,000 deaths were reported in a day after nearly a month. India’s recovery rate is 83.01 per cent, the highest in the world. The fatality rate, on the other hand, is 1.57 per cent.

Meanwhile, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu on Tuesday tested positive for the novel coronavirus. Releasing a statement, the office of the Vice President said that Naidu underwent a Covid-19 test today morning. As per reports, Naidu is asymptomatic and in home quarantine.

Releasing the findings of the second nationwide sero-survey on Tuesday, ICMR Director General Balram Bhargava said 6.6 per cent of the 29,082 people (aged 10 years and above) surveyed from August 17 to September 22 showed evidence of past exposure to Covid-19. The prevalence was higher for adults (aged 18 years and above) at 7.1 per cent.

meanwhile govt said India continues to report high number of recoveries. The recovered cases have exceeded the new confirmed cases again during the past 24 hours. With this, India’s Recovery Rate has leaped past 83% today. 84,877 recoveries have been registered in the last 24 hours in the country . The total number of recoveries has touched 51,01,397. 73% of the new recovered cases are being reported from ten States, viz. Maharashtra, Karnataka Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Odisha, Kerala, West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh. Maharashtra is topping the list with nearly 20,000 recoveries while Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh both contribute more than 7,000 to the single day recoveries. The sustained high level of recoveries have led to further widening of the gap between active and recovered cases. Recovered cases exceed the active cases (9,47,576 ) by more than 41.5 lakh (41,53,831). The recovered cases are 5.38 times the active cases ensuring that the recoveries are consistently rising. The active caseload of the country presently is merely 15.42% of the total positive cases and is consistently declining. A total of 70,589 new cases have been reported in the last 24 hours in the country. 10 States/UTs account for 73% of the new confirmed cases. Maharashtra continues to lead this tally. It has contributed more than 11,000 followed by Karnataka with more than 6,000 cases. There have been 776 deaths in the past 24 hours. 10 states/UTs account for 78% of the deaths in the last 24 hours due to COVID. Of the new deaths, Maharashtra reported more than 23% of deaths with 180 deaths followed by Tamil Nadu with 70 deaths.

Far from herd immunity

Union health minister Harsh Vardhan said the second nationwide sero surveillance conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) show the Indian population is still far from achieving herd immunity against Sars-CoV-2..

“Even the soon-to-be-released second sero survey indications are that we are far from having achieved any kind of herd immunity which necessitates that all of us should continue following Covid-appropriate behavior,” the health minister said in response to queries from social media users.

Herd immunity is used to describe the indirect protection conferred to a population in which the majority of people have natural or acquired immunity to an infection. This is possible either through a large proportion of the population getting infected or vaccinated.

Taking part in the interaction titled Sunday Samvad (dialogue) with social media users wherein he answers their questions on Twitter, Harsh Vardhan said the results of the second sero survey will soon be made public, but cautioned that people should guard against a sense of complacence.

“ICMR’s sero survey report should not create a sense of complacency in people as usually herd immunity is achieved when about 60-70% of a country’s population has developed antibodies against the virus. Since that is not the case for us yet, we must know that a significantly large population in India is susceptible to getting infected, which is why it is extremely important to observe Covid-19 appropriate behaviour,” the minister added.

The blood samples for the sero survey are tested for the presence of IgG (Immunoglobulin G) antibodies that determine if a past infection is due to the virus. Close to 24,000 samples that were lifted around the end of August and early September have been tested across the same 70 districts in 21 states, which were covered in the first sero survey.

Sero surveys are important also to determine whether the disease has entered the community transmission stage or not.

“All the parameters for collecting samples were the same around this time also, including the sample size,” the health minister said.

According to ICMR officials, the Phase 2 sero survey is a follow-up of the first, and the process is a repeat of what was done in May, when the movement of people was restricted.

Former President of India and Congress party veteran Pranab Mukherjee passed away on Monday at the age of 84. Pranab da had undergone brain surgery at Delhi’s Army Research and Referral hospital. The hospital said his health began declining on Monday after a lung infection resulted in septic shock. Mukherjee, who had also tested positive for coronavirus, was admitted to the hospital on August 10.

“With a Heavy Heart, this is to inform you that my father Shri #PranabMukherjee has just passed away in spite of the best efforts of Doctors of RR Hospital & prayers, duas & prarthanas from people throughout India! I thank all of You,” his son Abhijit Mukherjee tweeted.

In his over five-decade long political career, Mukherjee held various Cabinet positions for the governments led by by Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, P V Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh.

Fondly called ‘Pranab Da’ by his peers and friends, Mukherjee was born on December 11, 1935 in Birbhum district, West Bengal. He completed Masters in Political Science and History and LLB degree from University of Calcutta.

It all started when Indira Gandhi spotted him during a by-election in Midnapore where he was V.K. Krishna Menon’s election agent. His astute management saw Menon, a Malayali contesting in West Bengal as a candidate of Congress’ rival faction Bangla Congress, win with a huge margin.

Impressed with his political acumen, Gandhi brought Mukherjee into the Congress and initiated his parliamentary journey through the Rajya Sabha in 1969. Mukherjee first became the general secretary of the Congress in 1998. He was a member of the Congress Working Committee for 23 years. It’s a mixed bag legacy for the politician who won his first election in 2004 from Jangipur in West Bengal.

Mukherjee became India’s youngest finance minister in 1982 at the age of 47. From 2004, he went on to head three crucial ministries — external affairs, defence and finance — and became the first occupant of the Rashtrapati Bhavan to have this distinction.

The 84-year-old served as India’s 13th President from 2012-2017. A tough taskmaster, avid reader and history aficionado, Mukherjee ensured that he leaves his mark on the presidency. He made it easier for common people to visit the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Pranab Mukherjee was honored with Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award in 2019.

Mukherjee was known to have generously shared his experience with others, cutting across party lines. Political leaders across the sector offered their condolences to the bereaved family.

“India grieves the passing away of Bharat Ratna Shri Pranab Mukherjee. He has left an indelible mark on the development trajectory of our nation. A scholar par excellence, a towering statesman, he was admired across the political spectrum and by all sections of society,” wrote Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

President Ram Nath Kovind said in a tweet, “The nation mourns losing one of its worthiest sons. Condolences to his family, friends & all citizens.” Vice President Venkaiah Naidu also expressed grief. He said in a tweet, “He (Mukherjee) rose from humble beginnings to occupy the country’s highest constitutional position through hard work, discipline and dedication.”

“With great sadness, the nation receives the news of the unfortunate demise of our former President Shri Pranab Mukherjee. I join the country in paying homage to him. My deepest condolences to the bereaved family and friends,” former Congress President Rahul Gandhi wrote on Twitter.
